The Guilford College men's lacrosse team faced Shenandoah University on a rain soaked afternoon. The Quakers tried to rally but ultimately fell short to the Hornets, 10-9.
Shenandoah opened the scoring just 59 seconds into the game. It was the first of four-straight goals for the visitors.
Guilford netted the final goal of the opening period as Devin Morse found Gavin Brown. The Hornets led 4-1 going to the second.
In the second period, Shenandoah tallied the first score before
Joe Hirvonen bounced one past the keeper.
Andrew Burch picked up an assist as the Quakers trailed by three, 5-2.
The Hornets responded with two-consecutive goals. With 3:35 remaining in the first half, Morse cut through the middle of the defense as Gabe Alvarez found him for the catch-and-shoot. Shenandoah held the 7-3 lead at the half.
Guilford wasted little time to get the scoring going in the third. Joe Hirvonen scored off a pass from Aimery Workman to pull GC within three (7-4).
Shenandoah answered a little over three minutes later to extend its lead back to four. The Quakers had an answer of its own as
Aimery Workman and Alvarez scored to put the team down just two (8-6) going to the fourth.
Three minutes into the final 15, the Hornets scored a man-up. Just seven seconds later, Brown scored off a pass from Alvarez to make it a 9-7 game.
With 8:17 remaining in regulation, the GC offense went back to work. Seth Woods found Hirvonen who fired a shot into the top corner of the goal to make it a one-goal difference.
Shenandoah pushed the advantage ahead with a goal at the 5:25 mark. Burch and Guilford battled and found the back of the net with 3:55 left.Â
A big chance presented itself for the Quakers as a two-minute, non-releasable penalty was called on the visitors. Unfortunately, the hosts were only able to get one shot on target over the final 2-plus minutes as the team fell by one.
Brown led the team with two goals and two assists while Hirvonen scored three goals. Gavin Dellinger started in net and made 11 saves in the defeat.
Guilford will travel to Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday, April 12. Start time is set for 5:00 p.m.
