The Guilford College women's lacrosse team challenged Randolph College in the rain. Despite a late push by the WildCats, the Quakers were victorious, 15-13.
Randolph opened the scoring just 47 seconds into the contest. Guilford took over on offense scoring five-straight goals including three off the stick of Sydne Sawyer. Maggie Hartnett factored in three of the goals with one of her own.
With 3:59 on the clock, the WildCats scored on a free position to pull within three. Little over 30 seconds later, Hartnett netted her second of the game.
Randolph did not back down as it found the back of the net one more time in the first. However,
Maggie Bryson responded with a goal with only 31 seconds left to give Guilford the 7-3 lead.
In the second, Sawyer picked up where she left off as she scored her fourth of the day with just 24 seconds expired. The WildCats stayed right with the home team with a man-up to make the difference four (8-4).
The exchanging of goals continued as Bryson scored on a free position to put the Quakers ahead, 10-5. Guilford seemed to have a goal to make it 11-5 but a failed stick check called off the goal.
Randolph used the momentum as it scored two goals including a man-up opportunity. GC held on to the 10-7 lead with 5:33 left in the first half.Â
The Quakers and Bryson answered the call and scored the final goal of the second period. At the half, Guilford led 11-7.
To start the third, the two squads went back-and-forth until the WildCats scored back-to-back goals to pull within three, 13-10. The visitors added two more goals before Caitlyn Fisher scored off a Sawyer pass to lead 14-12 going to the final 15 minutes of regulation.
For the first four minutes of the period, the action went back-and-forth until Hartnett scored on a free position to go up, 15-12. Randolph found the back of the net with 8:25 on the clock.Â
Guilford weathered any attempts by the WildCats including three saves by Zenna Carson as the Quakers held on for the 15-13 win.
Hartnett finished with five goals and assists while Sawyer totaled six points (5G, 1A). In the win, Carson made 12 saves for GC.
Guilford travels to Averett University on Wednesday, April 12 with a 7:00 p.m. start time.
