The Guilford College men's soccer team opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference play against the Averett University Cougars. After holding a lead through halftime, the Quakers ultimately fell, 3-1.
The opening half was evenly matched. Both teams began to settle into the game and the scoring chances start to present themselves. Early on, Guilford had several shots on target that were brushed away by the Averett netminder.
The Cougars began to apply offensive pressure but
Roman Robinson stood tall in net for the Quakers. In the 45th minute,
Chris Hercules delivered a free kick directly into the box that found the head of
Jake Carter. Carter's shot floated over the keeper and gave GC the 1-0 edge going into the half.
Coming out of the half, the visitors began to take control of possession and eventually evened the game at one with 57:01 on the clock. Little over five minutes later, Averett captured the lead with its second goal of the contest.
Guilford struggled to get the ball into its offensive zone as the Cougars put four more shots on goal, all stopped by Robinson. Averett notched its final goal in the 84th minute, securing the final of 3-1.
Robinson made eight saves on the evening for the Quakers. The hosts held the advantage in corner kicks, 6-5 but lost the shot battle, 11-4.
Guilford (2-5, 0-1) remains home as it will take on the Bridgewater College Eagles on Saturday, September 23. Start time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
