Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

McMillan Leads Quakers to Victory Against Eagles

24 Points Help Avenge Last Weekend's Loss

The Guilford College women's basketball team squared off against Bridgewater College in a conference home matchup. A neck-and-neck battle throughout, the Quakers emerged victorious by a score of 61-54.

The first quarter started in similar fashion to Guilford's (14-5, 9-4) previous two games, a strong start racking up some early points. The opening two and a half minutes were scoreless for both teams until GC's Courtney McMillan layed one in the net for two. At 3:30 on the clock, McMillan made a three-pointer, giving GC the advantage 11-10. This play was the start of a 10-0 run for the Quakers, leading them to end the first with a six point advantage, 18-12.

The second period was shaky for GC as they were unable to reach a double-digit score. Guilford's first basket was not made until 6:58 was on the clock, a jumper by Markayla Massenburg. The Eagles (12-6, 8-4) doubled the Quakers score 16-8 and overall took the lead, 28-26 as the halftime buzzer sounded.

GC came back after the half with some fire on the court. Anna Giannopoulou and McMillan claimed the first four points, each with a layup of their own. Over the next few minutes, the Quakers and Eagles exchanged the lead a few times. However, at 6:17, Giannopoulou secured GC's lead for the remainder of the quarter with a layup, making the score 35-34. From here on out, the Quakers went on an 11-2 run, greatly contributing to their third period score of 20-14, overall, leading 46-42.

Mariah Barrie opened the fourth in the paint with a layup. This was followed by a 6-0 run by the Eagles, tying the score at 48. GC immediately clapped back with a 7-0 streak, which included layups by Zoe Bayer and McMillan. This put Guilford en route to their fifth straight home victory, avenging last weekend's loss 61-54.

McMillan powered the offense, contributing an impressive 24 points. This included making 3-3 three-pointers and an overall 9-11 (81.8%) from the field. Additionally, Carleigh Perry and Giannopoulou led with eight rebounds each.

The Quakers remain at Ragan-Brown Field House for their next matchup against Hollins University on Wednesday, January 31. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
