GREENSBORO, N.C. – Hosting the Bleed Crimson 7's Tournament, the Guilford College rugby team, led by
Zoe Tate's (Laytonsville, Md.) five tries, finished 1-2 on Saturday on the campus of Guilford College.
The Quakers opened the day with a victory over UNC Greensboro, 20-17 before falling to Emory & Henry, 30-17 and Newberry, 22-17. The day's results bring them to a 2-3-1 record thus far this fall.
UNC Greensboro- W, 20-17
Guilford started the day's action on a high note, with
Jasmine Cartwright (Kalispell, Mont.) going right down the middle for a quick, early try. Tate contributed a trio of tries in the match as well, lifting the cardinal and grey to a 20-17 victory in the opener.
Emory & Henry University- L, 30-17
A tough draw in the second match of the day with E&H, but GC had many of the team's newcomers get action. Once again, Cartwright started things off, this time scoring from an offload from
Trinity Swann (Gastonia, N.C.). Tate and
Jaden Gary (Charlotte, N.C.) also touched down for tires, but it Emory & Henry's offense won the day, coming away with the 30-17 win.
Newberry- L, 22-17
The last match of the day was a barn burner. Tate continued her outstanding performance, fighting off Newberry defenders to score early for the Quakers. Gary also broke through the line for five later. Cartwright evened things at 17 with a try late in the match. Despite the great battle by the Quakers, Newberry found just enough time to sneak one in to bring the final score to 22-17 in their favor.
Guilford hits the field next for the Guilford College 7's, for their second home tournament of the season on October 12th, kickoff at 11:00 AM.
