Women’s Basketball Pull Away Late to Defeat Virginia Wesleyan on the Road

Quakers pull away late with clutch performances from Bayer and Furr to secure a 65-52 road victory.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Guilford women's basketball team earned a second win in conference play after a convincing 65-51 victory over Virginia Wesleyan University at Townebank Arena in the Jane P. Batten Student Center.

Spearheading the Quakers were Zoe Bayer (Les Sables d'Olonne, France), who scored a team-high 15 point performance, shooting 5-10 from the field and a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe while adding four steals on the defensive end. Skyler Furr (Warrenton, V.a.)  dominated the paint, recording her third double-double of the season, with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Julianna Walter (Taylorsville, N.C.) contributed with ten points, shooting 3-6 from the field, 1-2 from beyond the arc, and 3-6 from the free-throw line. The junior filled in many other columns contributing four steals, three assists, and three rebounds.

Brianna Long led the Marlins with a double-double, scoring a game-high 21 points on 10-14 shooting while grabbing 10 rebounds. She was a dominant force in the paint and added three steals on defense. Keagan Schwab added 13 points, shooting 5-12 from the field, including Virginia Wesleyan's lone three-pointer. She also tallied five rebounds and one assist. Jaiden Hunter contributed eight points and four rebounds.

Guilford opened the game with strong defense and efficient shooting, taking an early 19-16 lead. Carleigh Perry (Faith, N.C.) set the tone with a quick layup, and Bayer followed with a three-pointer to spark the offense. Virginia Wesleyan's Brianna Long responded with a dominant inside game, scoring six points to keep the Marlins within striking distance. The Quakers' defense forced key turnovers, with Walter and Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C.) stepping up to stifle the Marlin's fast-break attempts.

Both teams struggled offensively in the second quarter, each scoring just 12 points. Furr controlled the glass for GC, securing offensive rebounds and converting second-chance points. McMillan added critical defensive stops, while Bayer contributed with a pair of steals and layups to maintain the Quakers' lead. Virginia Wesleyan's Keagan Schwab hit a layup late in the quarter, but the Quakers went into halftime up 31-28.

Guilford asserted control in the third, outscoring Virginia Wesleyan 15-13. Bayer continued to dominate as she scored a tough layup and converted an and-one opportunity to start the quarter. Furr continued to dominate in the paint, grabbing key rebounds and scoring inside. Despite a push from the Marlins, the Quakers' defense, led by Scott and McMillan, forced turnovers and limited second-chance opportunities, giving GC a 46-41 advantage heading into the fourth.

The Quakers pulled away in the final quarter, outscoring the Marlins 19-10. Walter's fast-break layups and Furr's strong interior play widened the gap, while Bayer sealed the game with free throws. Virginia Wesleyan's offense struggled to find rhythm against Guilford's relentless defensive pressure, managing just 3-13 shooting in the period. Guilford capitalized on turnovers, converting them into points to secure the 65-52 win.

The Quakers return to Ragan-Brown Field House to host William Peace University in a non-conference match-up on December 13. Tip-off is slated for 5 PM.
