Men’s Lacrosse Outclassed by Visiting Falcons in High-Scoring Affair

Seth Woods with a breakout solo performance, scoring five goals

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Guilford College men's lacrosse team continued their long season-opening homestand, welcoming the visiting Falcons of Pfeiffer University. A combined 12 goals across the second and third periods for the visitors led to an eventual 19-9 thumping of the Quakers on Wednesday night.

Guilford levels out at .500, sitting at 2-2, while Pfeiffer picks up their first victory of the spring, advancing to 1-3.

In goal, Quaker Darius Safavi-Abbassi (Culver City, Calif.), took the loss, playing the majority of the contest before being subbed out mid-way through the fourth. He made just eight saves to 18 goals given up, at a save percentage of .308. Falcon netminder Jason Rowland secured the win, owning the goalposts with nine saves and only six goals given up, with a .600 save percentage.

Despite losing by a large margin, lead faceoff man Jax Atkins (Mechanicsville, Va.) recorded 20 faceoff wins against an array of opposing specialists. Atkins also led his team in ground balls with four.

Coming off a four point performance last time out, Seth Woods (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) was a man on a mission, fighting his way to five goals and an assist, topping all Quakers. Gavin Brown (Charleston, S.C.) contributed two scores with an assist as well.

For the visiting Falcons, attacker Ethan Miles was in control, tallying six points which included four goals and two assists.

Just five minutes in, an array of defensive miscues from Guilford led to two quick goals for Pfeiffer to open the night. Coming out of a mid-period timeout, the Quakers settled in, slowly looking for a way to counter, and found their answer with a goal from Woods to cut PU's lead in half. Following the Quaker goal, the Falcons won the ensuing faceoff off a violation, and came right down the field to immediately restore their two-goal lead, a trend that would continue across the contest. The next few minutes were disordered with multiple turnovers occurring between both squads. When the dust settled, Woods was at it again, scoring his second of the night, and cutting their deficit to 3-2. Almost identical to the sequence from earlier, Pfeiffer countered quickly once more, scoring just twenty seconds later to make their lead 4-2, and the score remained so at the end of the first stanza.

GC were able to get a few shots on the opposing goalie to start the second, but PU once again opened the period with a score to make it 5-2. The visitors began to dominate the offensive side of the field from here, hardly relinquishing possession to Guilford. It took until the 5:29 mark to end a scoring drought, the Falcons scoring their sixth. Two minutes later, they tallied up two more in quick succession to break open the game with a six-goal lead. After giving up a ninth goal soon after, the Quakers ended their quarter-plus without scoring, with Woods netting his hat-trick towards the tail end of the period. Guilford almost went into the intermission clean until a clear error led to a buzzer-beater score from the visitors, reaching double digits with their 10th goal of the contest.

Pfeiffer put up six goals once more in the third, putting the game out of reach for Guilford. Despite out-scoring the Falcons through the fourth, their second and third quarter difficulties were ultimately their downfall, culminating in the 19-9 defeat.

GC returns to action during their spring break in another mid-week contest. From Ohio, Otterbein comes to Armfield Athletic Center on Wednesday, March 6. First faceoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
