Women’s Basketball Defeats Roanoke by Double-Digits on The Road

SALEM, Va. -- The Guilford College women's basketball team traveled to the Cregger Center for an evening conference matchup against Roanoke College. The Quakers cruised to victory with a 12-point lead, ending 84-72.

The first period opened with the Quakers (17-5, 12-4) going on a 7-0 run. This was followed by an exchange of three points from the Maroons (14-8, 9-6) and Courtney McMillan. A minute and a half of silence by both squads concluded when Ashtyn Zeigler was able to lay one in the net for two. Scoring was vastly spread apart for the remainder of time, with Zeigler scoring another three with 0:33 left on the clock. The quarter ended in similar fashion to many other games this season, GC gaining their advantage early, proving to be helpful in the long-game, 22-14.

The second quarter was quite opposite from the first, as GC was only able to score eight points. The first Guilford score was not until the 7:51 mark, a jumper by Markayla Massenburg. As the half came to an end, Guilford lost their lead by two, 32-30.

Guilford came back from the locker rooms with some fire, matching their first half scoring output in the third quarter, 30-23. With 6:13 on the clock, GC was racking up points from only three-pointers, with Carleigh Perry, McMillan, Taylor Dunn, and Zoe Bayer each scoring one of their own. Briahna Scott tallied two more three-pointers before the period came to an end, bringing GC's total to 60-55.

The fourth began with a GC 6-0 run, their defense not allowing the Maroons to score until the 6:28 mark. At 4:25, Bayer made a three-pointer, giving the Quakers a double-digit lead. The margin closed slightly, but again with the help of Bayer, McMillan, and an abundance of free throws, the Quakers were able to rise above, 24-17, overall ending 84-72.

McMillan led her team with 20 points. Additionally, Perry, Zeigler, and Scott all contributed double-digit scoring figures. Anna Giannopoulou, Perry, and McMillan each led with 7 rebounds each.

The Quakers return home for their final two contests of the season. On Saturday, February 10, GC will take on the University of Lynchburg. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
