ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Finally at the end of their eight-game away trek, Guilford yet again ended in a split doubleheader, traveling to Edge Field and facing off against North Carolina Wesleyan University. The Quakers, with a superb performance in game one (11-4), ended up falling in game two (2-0), unable to get on the board.
Guilford's record stays almost the same, now standing at 8-6. For North Carolina Wesleyan University, due to the split matches, their record also stays similar, at 7-5.
Morgan Kinney (Browns Summit, N.C.) took the pitching win for game one, reporting to the diamond for 3.1 innings, allowing five hits, two runs, three walks, and causing one strikeout. Prior to Kinney, Alexis Lester (Elkin, N.C.) had the opportunity to start, allowing three hits and two runs.
Tons of action in game one for the Quakers, able to rack up an early four-run lead from just the first inning alone. NC Wesleyan matched that output with four runs throughout the entire game, while Guilford tallied seven more, bringing the final score to 11-4.
Game two was pitched in full by Dillon Northen (Kernersville, N.C.), but her record unfortunately drops to 3-2. She threw for six innings, allowed seven hits but just two of which resulted in runs, and she faced 28 batters in total.
Offense for Guilford in game two was polar opposite of game one. Unable to get on the board, the Quakers fell, 2-0.
GAME 1
The first inning started hot for the Quakers. Morgan Singletary (Laurel Hill, N.C.) singled to right field, causing both Grace Calus (Creedmoor, N.C.) and Chloee Stoner (Salisbury, N.C.) to make it home. Just two plays later, Lani Procell (Orlando, Fla.) singled to center field, en route to Singletary, and Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.) coming home. Emma Patterson (Mocksville, N.C.) brought home one run in the second inning followed by a quiet third inning for both squads.
The Bishops tallied two runs in the fourth but this momentum was short lived as in the top of the fifth, the Quakers racked up five more runs, bringing the score to, 10-2. A ripple effect of runs, all of which started with Stoner singling to left field. Throughout the entire inning, she was the first to make it home, followed by Nicole Gumula (Wellington, Fla.) who was pinch running for Alli Clemons (Cocoa, Fla.), Camdyn Hill (Lexington, N.C.) who was pinch running for Johnson, then Singletary, and Faith Fennell (Buena Park, Calif.) made it around the bases. In the bottom of the fifth, NC Wesleyan managed to bring home their final two runs of the afternoon, which was no competition for the Quakers in game one.
No runs were scored in the sixth for both teams and the Quakers racked up one final run in the seventh. Fennell grounded out to the pitcher, resulting in one run for Clemons.
GAME 2
The latter of the doubleheader was far-fetched from mimicking the first game. NC Wesleyan scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning. One of which was scored on a wild pitch, and the other unearned. Playing a full seven innings, Guilford was unable to get on the board throughout.
After a long time away from Haworth Field, the Quakers will return home to take on crosstown rivals, Greensboro College in an afternoon doubleheader on Wednesday, March 20. Game times are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Make sure to "Bleed Crimson" and wear red to support the Quakers.
