GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Looking to get back into form down the home stretch of spring play, the women's tennis team welcomed Lynchburg for a non-conference faceoff at the McMichael Courts. In a match that came down to the absolute wire, the Quakers found a way, winning clutch three-set matches in singles to down the Hornets after four hours, 5-4.
GC ends their three-match skid, as their record jumps to 7-8, 3-5 against conference opponents. UoL's record drops to 2-12, 1-6 in conference play.
The Quakers were able to salvage a win in doubles, the no. 3 tandem of Nya Reed (Greensboro, N.C.) and Bethany Lupo (Tabor City, N.C.) won in a set tiebreak, as the match transitioned to singles.
Molly Wilson (Salisbury, N.C.) and Lupo were able to claim two-set victories, but that was as simple as the dual match would get. Singles matches 1-4 all went the distance, with the players battling through full third sets to decide a victor.
Kancie Tate (Mount Airy, N.C.) and Reed fell in their respective matches, and it would come down to Jolie Nhouyvanisvong (Greensboro, N.C.) and Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) at the no. 2 and 1 slots. Both players were able to squeak out wins, giving Guilford their first win over Lynchburg since the 2014-15 season.
The team's seventh win of the season also marks the first time they have reached six wins or better since 2015-16.
Averett is next on the docket for Guilford's last home match this spring, on Sunday, March 14. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
