Women’s Lacrosse Bested By Bridgewater Despite Carson’s Season-High in Saves

Offense cannot find traction in conference defeat

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Zenna Carson (Blacksburg, Va.) stopped a season-best 17 shots, but the offense could not get going in her support as the Guilford College women's lacrosse team fell to Bridgewater College, 15-2 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play at Bridgewater Stadium on Saturday evening.

With the loss, the Quakers drop to 5-7 on the season, 2-4 against ODAC opponents. Meanwhile, the Eagles get back to .500 at 7-7, 4-2 against conference competition.

Carson did allow 15 goals against her 17 saves on the night, but fell to 5-7 in net on the season. BC split time between Rachael Robinson and Maisen Jenkins in the cage, with the former earning the start and making three saves against a single goal allowed to receive the win and improve to 4-5. Jenkins made two stops against one goal permitted in the second half.

Held goalless for just the second time all season, Maggie Hartnett (Hebron, Maine) found herself on the facilitating side of things, distributing a pair of assists on the day to go with game-high marks of seven groundballs and five caused turnovers. Kylie Horn (Fairfax, Va.) and Kylie Wood (Greensboro, N.C.) were instead the GC goal-scorers. Kaity Petersheim and Lauren Roberts pilled up five points apiece on three goals and two assists, each also added three groundballs with the former collecting four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Ashley Venit and Annika Benson each contributed three scores in the win for the hosts.

Bridgewater required just 20 seconds to open the scoring, as Grace Pietro corralled the draw control, the ball found its' way to Roberts, Roberts found Venit, and Venit found the back of the net to seize the advantage. Guilford would hold the Eagles in check for almost five minutes before the home team got a scoring burst. Aunnie Hacker sparked the rally at the nine-and-a-half-minute mark before Benson and Petersheim followed suit within 30 seconds. Horn got GC on the board 100 seconds later off a Hartnett feed, but Benson's second, on a man-down chance with 4:36 remaining countered that. In the quarter's final 60 seconds, Venit scored twice, once on the man-up opportunity and then again at even strength, extending the BC lead to 7-1 after one.

While the host's scoring pace slowed in the second, they did get the game into running clock with over seven minutes remaining in the half. Hacker's second score got it started with Roberts, Petersheim, and Benson following suit later in the quarter.

Pilling it on in the third, the Eagles got goals from Roberts, Petersheim, and Jenna Entsminger before Wood finally ended the run of ten unanswered goals by finding the back of the net with four seconds remaining in the frame.

A largely quiet fourth only saw Roberts score once for the hosts, bringing the final score to 15-2.

The Quakers return to Appenzeller Field to host the Cougars from Averett University next on Wednesday, April 17. Opening draw is set for 6:00 PM.
