Women’s Lacrosse Rolls Eastern Mennonite on Senior Day Behind Carson, Hartnett

Four Quakers score multiple goals in first ODAC win of season

GREENSBORO, N.C. – It was a senior day to remember for the Guilford College women's lacrosse team, one without a cloud in the sky, a tremendous celebration, and a victory in blowout fashion over Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe Eastern Mennonite University, 15-2 on Saturday afternoon at Appenzeller Field.

The Quakers picked up their first on-field victory in ODAC play this season, pairing it with their administrative forfeit win over Randolph on Wednesday to improve to 2-2 in conference play, while also getting to the .500 mark this late in the season for the first time since 2019 at 5-5. The Royals, on the other hand, fall to 2-8, 1-5 against ODAC foes.

On a day that recognized her contributions to the women's lacrosse program, Zenna Carson (Blacksburg, Va.) was superb in net for the Quakers, matching her career-low with one goal permitted against seven saves across the first 45 minutes of play to improve to 5-5 on the year. Gabby Matthews (Kernersville, N.C.) played the final 15 stopping one of the two shots on frame that she faced. Cristal Narciso fell to 1-8 for EMU after allowing 15 goals against eight saves.

Like Carson, Maggie Hartnett (Hebron, Maine) was terrific on her senior day, scoring five times while assisting on another goal to go with three caused turnovers, two groundballs, and a draw control. Fellow fourth-year Quaker Kylie Horn (Fairfax, Va.) scored thrice with an assist, in addition to season-bests with four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Emma Garland (Hampstead, N.C.) put together the most well-rounded showing for the hosts, scoring three times, including on both of her free-position looks, assisting on one score, causing two turnovers, and collecting a game-high five draw controls and seven groundballs.

Eve Detter and Ainsley Clark each scored once for the guests while Amber Bonds had four draw controls, three groundballs, and a caused turnover with the former two marks being tied for the team lead.

Following a pre-game ceremony featuring flowers, family, and friends to recognize Carson, Hartnett, Horn, Maggie Bryson (Kernersville, N.C.), Hannah Hoffman (Statesville, N.C.), Grace Holmes (Chestertown, Md.), and Trinity Stryer (Raleigh, N.C.), and all of their contributions to the Quakers women's lacrosse program both on and off the field, it was game time and GC wasted little time enforcing their will on this contest.

It took less than two minutes for Hartnett to break the ice, taking a feed from Horn to claim the lead. Precisely 60 seconds later, she was on the distributing end, finding Kylie Wood (Greensboro, N.C.) to make the score 2-0 good guys. An eight-minute hiatus ensued before the Quakers had another scoring burst. Hartnett's second tally got it started at exactly the four-minute mark. Within the ensuing 120 seconds, Sammy Keene (Greensboro, N.C.) and Garland each notched free-position goals, with the latter being in a man-up situation bringing the advantage to five after the first quarter.

The Royals got one back to open the second with Lili Guerrero finding Detter while they were on the man-disadvantage, but Guilford swiftly countered as Wood found paydirt off a dish by Bryson just 40 seconds later. Two more man-up scores for GC, the first by Garland off a Keene assist and the second with Garland assisting Hartnett, extended the advantage to 7 prior to the mid-way point in the stanza. Hartnett's fourth of the game, an unassisted score at the 5:42 mark, followed by Horn's second and third tallies of the contest, the first assisted by Reagan Carroll (Greensboro, N.C.), and the second handled herself, got the game into running clock before the horn sounded for halftime.

The Quakers dominated the first half of play. The shots were only a 20-7 advantage for the hosts, with Carson making some tremendous stops among her four saves, but often times, it did not get to her as GC forced a dozen turnovers, and only permitted Eastern Mennonite to be successful on three of their nine clear attempts in the half.

With the game well in-hand, Guilford did ease up some in the second half of play although they still scored thrice in the third quarter. Garland found the back of the net with her second free-position goal, and third total on the afternoon, at the 13:25 mark. Keene assisted Horn before Bryson got in on the senior-day fun with her 13th goal of the year with 5:52 to play.

Hartnett registered her fifth goal of the game and 29th of the season with a man-up score before EMU halted the host's run of ten unanswered on a Clark free-position score to bring the final tallies to 15-2.

The Quakers finally hit the road for some ODAC action next, as they will make the trip up to Roanoke on Wednesday, April 10 to battle the Maroons with first draw at 4:00 PM.
