GREENSBORO, N.C. - Natalie Moore (Talbott, Tenn.) registered 14.0 points and a .167 hitting percentage in the match against the cross-town rival as the Guilford College volleyball team was defeated by Greensboro College, 3-1 (26-24, 21-25, 13-25, 21-25) at the Hanes Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
Â
Guilford now has a 3-6 record while Greensboro walks away 5-3.
Â
Statistical leaders for Guilford include Moore with a double-double performance of 12 kills and ten digs,
Maddi Page (Jonesboro, Ga.) with 25 assists alongside ten digs, and
Madison Bozarth (Greensboro, N.C.) finishing with 16 digs.
Â
Contributors for the Pride were Kelci Brooks with 11 for both kills and digs, Grace Klingensmith finishing with team-high 19 assists, and Morgan Mayfield leaving with team-best 15 digs alongside two assists.
Â
The Quakers were off to a fantastic start thanks to efforts from
Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.), who ended the night with second team-best seven kills,
Marie Hall (High Point, N.C.) contributed two of her three kills in the first set, and a kill from Moore, making the score 11-4. As a rebuttal, the Pride went on a 6-1 stretch due to kills from Brooks, Larkin Baxley, and Taylor Cotie, who finished with seven kills. Kills from Page and Moore would keep GC alive and well as the score alternated. With the score tied at 20,
Chrisbel Alcantara (San Juan, P.R.) delivered a crucial kill to break the tie, and a series of service and attacking errors, along with an ace, worked in Guilford's favor. The Quakers were victorious against the Pride in set one, 26-24.
Â
In set two, kills from
Vanessa Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.), Hall, and Moore kept the Quakers in the groove until the Pride went on a 5-0 run. Kills by Brooks and Baxley, along with a bad set, a service ace, and an attack error, extended the lead. However, the momentum shifted in favor of the Quakers as attacking errors mounted against the opposition.
Vivian Cavataio (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and
Kaci Johnson contributed kills, and a kill from Moore evened the score at 17. It was not long until
Zoe Whisnant (Greensboro, N.C.) stepped up and got three consecutive kills to make the score 21-18. Whisnant ended the game with six kills and a half-dozen digs. A 7-0 Greensboro-run and back-to-back kills from Brooks ended the set, 25-21.
Â
Set three opened with a pair of kills from Whisnant and one from
Kaci Johnson, leveling the score at 5-5. The Pride then advanced the score with a 5-0 run due to a kill from Charlotte Michaels, attacking errors, a service ace, and a bad set.
Vanessa Johnson, Whisnant, and Moore fought to keep Guilford's offense alive, but Greensboro's 10-2 run sealed the set with a 25-13 victory.
Â
The final set had a promising start for GC as the score stood at 12-7 due to Hall, Moore, Alcantara, and
Kaci Johnson. Greensboro's eight set errors was a vital point as to why Guilford kept up in set four. This changed when Greensboro tightened up their offense and scored five-straight points, followed by two separate 4-0 runs, putting Guilford in a difficult position. A bad set, along with efforts from Page and Moore to keep the Quakers in the game, were not enough as the Pride took the set 25-21, securing a 3-1 final score.
Â
The Quakers are on the road again Wednesday Sept. 18th vs. Averett University at 7 p.m.
