GREENSBORO, N.C. - Natalie Moore (Talbott, Tenn.) lead the Quakers in kills while fresh faces saw the starting lineup as Guilford College was upended by Washington & Lee University on Friday evening on Jack Jensen Court in the Ragan-Brown Field House, 3-0 (14-25, 17-25, 5-25).
Guilford falls to a 3-8 record while Washington & Lee depart with an 11-0 record.
Go-to players for Guilford were
Vivian Cavataio (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) with her first start of the season and 16 digs, Moore garnered seven kills, and
Maddi Page (Jonesboro, Ga.) finished with 16 assists.
Statistical leaders for Washington & Lee included Grace Mitchener who tallied nine kills paired with 14 digs, Avery Myers who walked away with 11 kills, and Allie Buchholz who had game-high 28 assists.
Angel Brown (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) got GC on the board early with a kill in her first start of the season along with two blocks. Kills stemming from Buchholz and Myers along with an attacking error got the ball rolling for W&L. The Quakers and the Generals went head-to-head for a stretch until the score became 12-8. Mitchener, Schellenberg, and Goerig all contributed to the 7-0 stretch alongside attacking errors. Moore, with an assist from Page, managed a kill that briefly stalled the Generals, but W&L ultimately secured a 25-14 set victory.
In set two, attacking errors combined with contributions from
Chrisbel Alcantara (San Juan, P.R.), Johnson, and Moore kept the Quakers level with the Generals at 5-5. Errors played a crucial role in the Generals pulling ahead, with GC committing ten compared to W&L's five in set two alone. Back-to-back kills from Moore boosted the Quakers briefly to ignite a 5-2 stretch, however Washington & Lee won the set, 25-17.
The final set belonged to the Generals as they put it away early with a 20-1 run. In set three, Alcantara and
Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.), both finishing with four kills, along with
Vanessa Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Bailey Prewitt (Kalispell, Mt.), contributed kills. Washington & Lee won set three, 25-5 and secured a final game score 3-0. Prewitt and
Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.) made their college debuts in tonight's match, with Mapes contributing two assists and Prewitt adding three digs.
Guilford is back on Jack Jensen Court at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21st against Bridgewater College to kick off the Homecoming festivities.
