Storm Delay Not Enough, Men’s Soccer falls in Conference Opener

Quakers unable to overcome Wildcats defensive dominance

GREENSBORO, N.C - The Guilford College men's soccer team hosted their first conference home opener on Wednesday night, at Appenzeller Field, against Randolph College, falling short by a score of 1-0 against the Wildcats
 
The Quakers were unsuccessful in today's match up, dropping to 3-4-0 on the season. The Wildcats improved to 2-2-4.
 
Chris Kelley (Lexington, N.C.) got the nod in goal for Guilford, securing two saves amongst the sevens he faced. Falling to 2-3-0 in net. Carter Kelley made the start in net for Randolph, improving to 3-2-4 for Randolph, making one save among the single shot attempt by the hosts.
 
The Quakers looked to get ahead on the impending weather, as the scheduled time was pushed forward for 6 P.M, In an attempt to beat the weather. Unfortunately, luck was not on our side and the game was delayed for about an hour until gameplay resumed, with about 30 minutes left to play in the first half.
 
The first 45 were a bit of a stalemate, as both teams went back and forth, exchanging possessions and attempting to find a breakthrough on the offensive side. Randolph was able to sneak in four shot attempts, with one on target. Kelly made his presence known with a great save, after a shot attempt by Anelka Ngoy, who placed it at the top right of the goal frame, but was quickly rejected, resulting in a corner kick.
 
In the second half, The Quakers were met with a pair of counters and offensive attempts by the Wildcats. In the 57th minute, a freekick was granted to the Wildcats, around the 25 yard line, Gabe Barragan sent a cross in to the box, Kelley attempted to clear the ball with a punch but missed the execution, resulting in a tap-in by Gavin Leverette, securing the winning goal for the Wildcats.
 
At the 67th mark, GC formed a pair of passes amongst the midfield, Chris Hercules (Greensboro, N.C.) executed a quick dump, off the edge of his cleat, making way for Landon Metzler (Cornelius, N.C.), dribbled into the 18' and ripped a shot but was denied by Wildcat keeper, Carter Kelley.
 
Guilford looks to stay at home as they face Washington and Lee University, in a conference matchup on September 28. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 P.M.
