GREENSBORO, N.C. - A wide range of players contributed to the victory as Guilford College conquered Hollins University, 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-10) on Wednesday night on Jack Jensen Court in the Ragan-Brown Field House.
The Quakers now rise to a 5-9 record while Hollins falls to a 2-14 record.
Key factors in the win for Guilford were
Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.),
Natalie Moore (Talbott, Tenn.), and
Zoe Whisnant (Greensboro, N.C.) all with five kills a piece.
Madison Bozarth (Greensboro, N.C.) was all over it on defense with a baker's dozen digs.
Statistical leaders for Hollins were Selena Wolfe with team-high five kills, Anisia Dean who dished out 12 assists, and Rachel Hull finishing the night with half-a-dozen digs.
The Quakers got off to a strong start, with kills from
Chrisbel Alcantara (San Juan, P.R.),
Maddi Page (Jonesboro, Ga.),
Haley Pasour (Winterville, N.C.), and Moore boosting their confidence.
Vanessa Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) welcomed herself to the party with two of her four kills to extend the lead 11-4. Hollins was unable to string together more than two consecutive points for the rest of the set. Consecutive kills by
Kaci Johnson, along with kills from Pasour,
Vanessa Johnson, and Moore, combined with attacking and service errors, led to the Quakers' 25-13 set victory.
In set two, there was a significant player rotation seen throughout the rest of the match for Guilford including
Bailey Prewitt (Kalispell, Mt.) as she added two kills in this set,
Lacie Evans (Statesville, N.C.) made her second appearance this season with season-best six assists, and
Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.) dished out four assists.
Kaci Johnson and Moore were the spark that lit the Quakers' offense and inspired a 6-0 run. Wolfe's kill silenced Guilford momentarily until GC harvested yet another 6-0 run, making the score 19-8. Cassidy Henderson added some late kills for Hollins, but Pasour, Whisnant, and company closed out the set, securing another set win for Guilford, 25-13.
Back-to-back kills from Page, a kill by Whisnant, combined with Hollins' attacking errors and a pair of aces, pushed the score to 8-0. HU quickly responded with their longest scoring run of four points, capitalizing on GC's errors.
Angel Brown (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) alongside Page added points during the 9-1 run for the Quakers. HU attempted a comeback due to a Wolfe-kill and using GC's errors to their slight advantage, but kills from Alcantara,
Vanessa Johnson, and consecutive kills from Whisnant sealed the final set 25-10, completing the Quakers' sweep.
Guilford is at home again on Jack Jensen Court facing Eastern Mennonite on Friday, Oct. 4th at 6:00 p.m.
