GREENSBORO, N.C. – Tristan Bailey (Statesville, N.C.) came down with a second-quarter interception, matching the Quakers' Division-III Era program-record for interceptions with 15, but the Guilford College football team (2-4, 1-3 ODAC) got blitzed by Shenandoah University (4-1, 2-1 ODAC) in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.
Bailey matches OJ Batts '04 with his career picks total, while elevating to a tie for third-most INTs overall in a career. He was not the lone GC player to etch himself in the record books, either, as for the third time in six weeks,
Travis Burton (Pikeville, N.C.) racked up 4.5 tackles for a loss, good for eighth-most in a single game in program history.
Offensively, the Quakers were able to move the ball some, but, especially in the first half, really stalled out between the 40's.
Caleb Robles (Wilmington, N.C.) lost a fumble on one of his nine rushes for 15 yards on the day and while he did complete 12-of-18 through the air in the first half, those plays only accumulated to 68 yards.
Luke Hyatt (Wadesboro, N.C.) took over in the second half and threw the lone Guilford TD while connecting on 8-of-12. No matter who was distributing,
Cameron Campbell (Flowery Branch, Ga.) was their top target as he hauled in six passes for 39 yards.
Josh Long (Elon, N.C.) led all players in receiving yards with 83, most of which came on his 68-yard scoring catch-and-run.
Ben Parry (Chapel Hill, N.C.) also had career-highs for catches and yardage with four for 25.
Evan Sullivan (McBee, S.C.) paced the ground game with 50 yards on eight totes.
In his second collegiate start, Mekhi Brown threw one interception but also has four TD throws going 14-of-20 for 251 yards before Eli Fleming completed just 6-of-10 for 26 yards in relief for the guests. Jackson McFarland led Shenandoah with six catches for 45 yards and a score. Jalen Redfearn headed the Hornets in yards with 82 on just two catches. Aidan McCloskey and Bryce Buchanan finished equal as the game's top rushers, each recording 70 with the former finding the endzone.
Defensively, Burton paced all players with 15 total tackles on the day followed by
Aden Reece (Wilmington, N.C.) with 10, adding his first career interception in the game. Bailey had a pair of pass break-ups along with his INT.
Matt Conroy and Ryan Apietu had 10 tackles apiece for SU, with the latter notching half a sack and 3.5 TFLs. Devin Keasey had a strip sack while also recovering a separate fumble.
The explosive plays were the name of the game in this day, as three of Shenandoah's scores were for 60-or-more yards, one pass, one run, and one punt return, and another two TDs were set up by 40-plus yard plays. The Hornets outpaced Guilford in offensive yardage, 471-241, out-rushing and out-passing them, 194-64 and 277-177 respectively. The turnover battle finished even with two each way while SU went 6-of-12 on third down, but GC finished just 6-for-15.
Guilford's first drive showed some promise with a couple first downs, but nothing came of it before Shenandoah threw an immediate right hook. On their first offensive play of the day, Brown hit Redfearn on a screen and he broke several tackle attempts on his way to a 79-yard score. Other than that, the first quarter was a quick and uneventful frame.
The second stanza is when the guests opened things up. After a short play into the quarter-break, McCloskey got free for a 60-yard scoring rush on the quarter's first snap. Their next drive opened with Buchanan getting away for 40 yards with McFarland eventually getting home to finish the drive on a catch from one yard away. GC then went three-and-out and Sean Perry brought the punt back 73 yards for the score and just like that, it was a 28-0 game at the half.
Out of the locker room, Brown hit Roge't Walker on a crosser a couple plays in and he took it for a 57-yard gain, on third down no less. Brown dished to Carter Rodriguez from five yards away on the following play for another TD. Finally on their first lengthy scoring drive of the day, the guests saw a 10-play, 60-yard venture end on a Brown to Forrest connection.
In the fourth Carson Gallant chipped in a 22-yard field goal and Long caught a ball and took it to the house from 68 yards away, finalizing the score at 45-7.
The Quakers are back on the Appenzeller Field turf a week from today to host No. 25/RV Randolph-Macon College for an ODAC clash on Saturday, October 18
th at 1:00 PM.
