Men’s Soccer’s Drops A Tense Contest to the Eagles After A Late Goal in the Closing Minutes

Too many Quaker falters on the defense lead Guilford to fail moving up in the conference standings.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford men's soccer team (3-6-1, 0-2-0 ODAC) scored twice early in the second-half off of a short timespan against Bridgewater College (7-2-1, 2-0-0 ODAC). Although the Quakers would see the finish line to conference points, they would ultimately fall short off a late-defensive mistake leading to an Eagles victory, 3-2, at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
 
Ildis Vital-Peraza (Vienna, Va.) would draw the start for the Quakers, active for the entirety of regulation. Vital-Peraza would scoop up eight saves off of three goals against, from a battering 20 shot attempts, dropping his record to 2-5-0 on the season. Bridgewater's keeper, Davis Bashore, held the reins for the entirety of play for the Eagles. Bashore would reel in three saves off of two goals against, from eight shot attempts, bringing his record to 4-2-1 on the season.
 
Guilford's offensive showing was evident in the battle, kicking off with Jaykob Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) off of his lone shot attempt. Isaac Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) would add to the box score with another Quakers goal off of a single shot attempt. Saeed Saavedra (Mount Airey, N.C.) would hold heavy contributions to Guilford's totals with two shot attempts, one being on-goal.
 
Trey Widrick would hold strong for the Eagles on the night with two goals off of seven shot attempts, five being on goal. Riley Queen would benefit Bridgewater's offensive front with a goal of his own off of three shot attempts, two being on goal. Anthony Petrano showed his ground on offense with three shot attempts in game, two being on goal.
 
Bridgewater could kickoff the scoring in the match 16 minutes in with a goal from Widrick, assisted from Anthony Eugenio in the top-left corner of the net, initially after an unsuccessful Eagles clear.
 
The Eagles would juke around the Quakers defense after multiple Guilford fouls and yellow cards, ultimately leading to a goal by Queen, assisted by Widrick in the 35th minute.
 
Guilford would start off blistering hot with two goals in a two minute period. Jaykob Garbia would get the Quakers off the board with a deep kick to the right side of the net in the 47th minute. Isaac Garbia would follow-suit with a goal of his own, assisted by Cameron Robinson (Garner, N.C.), deflected off of an Eagles defender.
 
After a highly contested showing by both teams, too many defensive mistakes would be the downfall of the Quakers after a late Quaker foul, leading to a goal off of a free-kick by Widrick in the 90th minute. Guilford would ultimately be on the losing end after the closing minutes of the battle, resulting in a 3-2 decision in favor of the Eagles.
 
The Quakers will be heading on the road for another conference matchup against No. 23 nationally-ranked Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday, October 4th at Hellmuth-Gibson Field in Hampden-Sydney, Va. First kick at 7:00 PM.
