Women’s Soccer Drops Road Contest To Shenandoah

Brown nets late tally, but offense gets restricted overall in defeat

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Guilford College women's soccer team (8-7-2, 2-7-0 ODAC) was defeated in a crucial Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) encounter with Shenandoah University (9-6-3, 7-2-0 ODAC), 2-1 on Friday night Glo Fiber Field at Shentel Stadium.

With the defeat, the Quakers no longer control their own postseason fate, needing a pair of Randolph College defeats, at least one Averett loss, and a Hollins victory over Eastern Mennonite University tomorrow to have a chance at the eighth seed in the conference tournament.

For the third-straight match, Madison Motto (Waxhaw, N.C.) passed the eye test, but nonetheless ended up on the wrong side of the decision, falling to 4-5-0 after allowing two goals against nine saves on the 16 total Hornet shots. Morgan Musselman got the start for the hosts and made two saves on the two GC shots of the first half, getting credit for the win to improve to 5-1-2. Molly Donaldson put the finishing touches on the win making one save but allowing one goal in the second half on the four total shots faced.

Lily Brown (Boone, N.C.) contributed a late tally for the Quakers, although it was not enough in this one. Ashlyn Kahre (Fort Mill, N.C.) took two shots on-goal and did get credited with a helper. Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.) was the only other player with an on-target shot on the evening while Emily Parker (Lillington, N.C.) attempted one look that was off-frame.

Kaitlyn Wahl netted a goal that did end up as her first game-winning tally of the fall, while assisting on another score for Shenandoah on the evening. McKenna Newcombe contributed the matches' initial goal for the hosts as well.

The Hornets broke through in just the eighth minute of action. Newcombe advanced into the offensive zone, working from right wing to left wing, scooping the free ball before distributing into the left corner to Wahl. The Hornets attacker tried to work a cross through the box, one that was deflected by a Quaker, but unfortunately right back to the feet of Newcombe who got a chance from the top of the 18' beyond the right post and rocketed it past Motto to the top-middle for the matches' opening tally with her 11th goal of the season.

In the 23rd minute, Wahl took care of business herself. Prodding the left wing, she beat a Quaker defender then worked through an attempt to jab the ball away inside the 18'. For her efforts, she got an uncontested chance from the top of the 6' off the right post and went cross-crease and into the bottom left for her third tally of the fall.

The second half proceeded as a stalemate for a majority of the time, with the Quakers getting a late one back. Kahre got loose on a run down the left wing thanks to a perfect distribution by Brown, drawing Donaldson up off her line to make a play the ball. In the end, the senior actually ended up as the beneficiary of the play, as the rebound found her and she was able to use one-touch at the top of the 18' and beat a lonely defender who was back with her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 88th minute.

Unfortunately, it was not enough though, as the match finished in a 2-1 decision.

Guilford returns to Appenzeller Field for their regular season finale on the evening of Wednesday, October 29th, hosting Eastern Mennonite University at 6:00 PM.
