GREENSBORO, N.C. – After registering one of the most-dominant seasons in Guilford College football history,
Travis Burton (Pikeville, N.C.) received a very-well-earned All-American nod from D3football.com, receiving Third Team All-America recognition at defensive end, as announced by the organization on Monday afternoon.
The second-year edge rusher rewrote the Quaker record books this fall, finishing on the short list of the nation's most-disruptive defenders. Burton finished fourth in Division-III in sacks per game, with 1.33, and tied for eighth in total sacks with 12.0 for GC. Within the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), Burton not only paced field, but cleared it with room to spare, finishing with 4.5 more takedowns of opposing quarterbacks than any other defender in the league. He was more than just a pass-rusher, though, becoming a supremely well-rounded defender in his second season in Greensboro. Living in opposing backfields did not just lead to sacks, but an abundance of negative plays as well. The Pikeville native paced all of NCAA football, regardless of division, in tackles for a loss per game, with a mark of 2.94, 0.14 more than any other defender in the NCAA. His TFLs total of 26.5 was finally surpassed in postseason play for the lead in Division-III, but he maintained a hold of second in the nation despite just nine games played. His TFLs total is believed to be the most in ODAC history. Overall, Burton accrued 81 total tackles this season, fifth-most in the conference, with 35 of them standing as solo tackles. His rate of 9.0 total tackles per game finished ranked 59
th in Division-III.
Burton is the first Quaker to receive All-America honors is over half-a-decade, with the last being Jermaine Russell '20 back in 2019 as a D3Football.com All-America Honorable Mention. The last GC player to make one of the top-four squads as selected by D3Football.com was De'Eric Bell '19 in 2018, when legendary back was a consensus All-America pick. Burton becomes the first Guilford defender to be selected as one of the nation's best since Vic Smith Jr. '18 made the Third Team as a safety back in 2017.
