Women’s Basketball Opens Guilford Holiday Classic With Win Over St. Mary’s (Md.)

Massenburg records double-double as Quakers cruise in Holiday Classic debut

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College women's basketball team (10-0, 2-0 ODAC) opened the Guilford College Holiday Classic with an emphatic 88-71 victory over the Seahawks of St. Mary's College of Maryland (7-5, 2-0 United East) on Sunday afternoon inside Ragan-Brown Field House. With the win, the Quakers improved to 10-0 on the season, extending their historic run once again.

The Quakers shot 61.1% from three-point range and totaled 24 assists, continuing a trend of efficient, team-oriented basketball. Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C.) led the way for Guilford, finishing with 17 points and a career-high nine assists. Markayla Massenburg (Raleigh, N.C.) recorded the first double-double of her career, posting career-highs of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Karly Glahn (Charlotte, N.C.) added a career-best 14 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Anna Giannopoulou (Athens, Greece), Evelyn George (Hillsborough, N.C.), and Julianna Walter (Taylorsville, N.C.) all finished with 11 points apiece, as Guilford placed six scorers in double digits.

The Seahawks were paced by Keira Mason, who poured in a game-high 31 points and pulled down 17 rebounds for an impressive double-double. Samantha Blaylock added 14 points, while Olivia Liszt chipped in 10.

The Quakers came out firing, opening the game on a 27-16 first-quarter run before extending the margin to 55-28 by halftime.

St. Mary's responded in the third quarter behind a scoring surge from Mason. Although the Seahawks cut into the deficit during the period, a timely layup from Elly Trickett (Greer, S.C.) midway through the quarter halted the momentum and steadied the Quakers' lead.

Guilford regained control in the final frame, outscoring St. Mary's to close out the contest 88-71.

With their undefeated record intact, Guilford continues play in the Guilford College Holiday Classic on Tuesday, December 30, welcoming the Lions of Piedmont University. Tipoff is set for 11:00 A.M.
