LYNCHBURG, VA -
Anna Giannopoulou's (Athens, Greece) driving effort and
Skyler Furr's (Warrenton, N.C.) third double-double could not close it out as the Guilford College women's basketball team (14-10, 8-7 ODAC) was defeated by Randolph College (11-12, 6-8 ODAC), 63-55 in the Frances and Don Giles Gymnasium on Saturday late afternoon. With this setback, GC continues to lead the series against RC, bringing the series record to 49-9.
The leading scorers for Guilford included Giannopoulou, who finished with team-high 16 points, going 8-for-13 from the floor, and nine rebounds, Furr, who scored 11 points, grabbed 14 boards, and garnering a block and a steal, while
Julianna Walter (Taylorsville, N.C.) had ten points, four rebounds, and team-high three steals.
Courtney McMillan (Lexington, N.C.) gave her contributions with nine points, three boards, had two assists, and a steal.
Standouts for the Wildcats were Kylie Stark with the game-high 27 points, going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, and getting three steals, Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson had an all-around game with 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks, while Simone Brown ended things with eight points, 15 rebounds, five steals, and a block.
In the first, Randolph opened with a layup from Crenshaw-Patterson, but Guilford answered with a three from
Carleigh Perry (Faith, N.C.) to lead 3-2.
Briahna Scott's (Graham, N.C.) three put GC up 6-2 before Randolph tied it at 6-6. After McMillan's free throws briefly gave Guilford the lead, Randolph responded with a 12-5 run, highlighted by Stark's two threes and fastbreak layups from Jackson and Crenshaw-Patterson, extending their lead to 20-13. Guilford cut the deficit with Walter's free throws and Furr's fastbreak layup, ending the quarter trailing 21-18.
Guilford started the second quarter strong with back-to-back layups from Giannopoulou, cutting Randolph's lead to 23-22. McMillan's layup then put GC ahead 24-23. However, Randolph quickly regained control, as Jackson and Crenshaw-Patterson led a 9-1 run, extending their advantage to 32-25. Although GC alone was responsible for seven turnovers this quarter, Guilford outscored Randolph 5-2 in bench points. Despite the Quaker's efforts to close the gap, Stark's free throws in the final seconds secured a 34-25 halftime lead for Randolph.
Out of the half, Giannopoulou, Scott, and Walter fueled a quick run to cut Randolph's lead to 36-31, as Guilford outscored them 12-4 in the paint. Randolph rebutted with a 7-2 run, capped by Renee Clines' jumper and Stark's three, extending the lead to 43-36. Furr dominated the boards with six rebounds, but despite Walter's fastbreak layup, Stark and Crenshaw-Patterson pushed Randolph ahead 47-38. Late free throws from Scott were not enough, as Randolph closed the quarter up 49-39.
In the final minutes, Randolph's lead was cut from 12 to just four with baskets from Furr and her six boards in this period alone alongside help from Giannopoulou and Walter. Randolph responded with key plays from Stark and Crenshaw-Patterson, maintaining a slim advantage. Giannopoulou kept GC close with two 15-footers, but Stark's free throws and a layup from Brown advanced Randolph's lead to 63-55. Regardless of the Quakers' effort, late turnovers and missed opportunities allowed Randolph to hold on for the win.
GC surpassed their season average with 51 rebounds (above 42.8) but fell short in steals with nine (below 16.7) and struggled with turnovers, committing 23 instead of staying under 20.9. Defensively, they limited Randolph to 36 rebounds (below 40.7) but forced only 13 turnovers (under 26.8) while allowing 13 steals, exceeding their target of 10.5.
Guilford will enjoy their Senior Day festivities to wrap up the regular-season schedule as they prepare to face Hollins University. Tip-off is slated for Saturday, Feb. 22nd at 2 p.m. in the Ragan-Brown Field House.
