GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College women's lacrosse team (1-3, 0-1 ODAC) dropped a nonconference clash to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe the University of Lynchburg (2-1, 0-0 ODAC), 20-1, on Tuesday evening at Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center.
The Uof L outshot GC 42-8 in the contest, including 36-6 in shots on target. The game finished fairly even on the draw with the guests holding a 13-10 edge, but Guilford went just 11-for-20 on clears against Lynchburg going 19-of-20.
Kennedy Gates (Cornelius, N.C.) played the first 10:41 for the Quakers in net and permitted eight goals against two saves, ending up on the hook for the loss to drop to 1-3.
Sammy Keene (Greensboro, N.C.) went the rest of the way for GC and fared better allowing 12 goals against 14 saves but did not factor into the decision. Alexis Senn only faced six shots on frame over all 60 in net for the Hornets. She allowed one goal against five saves to get the win and improve to 2-1.
Riley Gravley (Greensboro, N.C.) scored the lone tally for GC while adding two draw controls, two caused turnovers, and a groundball to her line.
Maggie Hartnett (Oxford, Maine) forced a trio of turnovers adding two groundballs and
Carm DeFeo (Shelton, Conn.) led all players with a quartet of draw controls.
Sydney Dumas scored four goals for the UofL and McKenna Steinau had three goals and an assist. Elizabeth Poitras also netted a trio of tallies while Margaret Scoggin, Jayme Thomas, Neely Morris, and Jenna Norko all also contributed multiple goals.
Receiving an early free-position, Mya Hausauer took advantage just 52 seconds in for the Hornets giving them a near instant lead. Dumas then got a pair of tallies within a 12 second span in the third minute of play. The UofL piled it on beginning at the 9:42 mark with Morris, then Thomas, Scoggin, and Dumas all scoring within two minutes and seven seconds. Thomas netted her second, Steinau scored on the man-up chance, and Morris cashed in on a free position to get the game into running clock before Poitras scored ahead of the horn to make the tallies 11-0 through one quarter.
The Hornets slowed their scoring pace in the second with Dumas getting them to a dozen at the 12-minute mark with her fourth goal of the game. Steinau, Isabella Vogel on the man-up, and Norko followed suit to extend the lead to 15-0 halfway through.
Poitras, Norko, Scoggin, and then Poitras again on a free-position chance delivered to extend the lead in the third before Steinau finalized the scoring for the guests in the final frame. Late in the fourth, however, Gravley got a free position opportunity and took advantage, beating the keeper low, short-side, completing the score at 20-1.
Guilford hits the road for their first nonconference road game of the year, visiting Methodist next on Thursday, February 27
th beginning at 5:00 PM.
