Women’s Basketball Edged Out by Bridgewater on the Road

Giannopoulou stands out while the Quakers come up shy in last-minute showdown

BRIDGEWATER, VA. - Anna Giannopoulou (Athens, Greece) led the way as the Guilford College women's basketball team (13-9, 7-6 ODAC) just barely missed the mark against Bridgewater College (18-3, 11-2 ODAC), 61-60 in Nininger Hall on Saturday afternoon. The defeat gives the Quakers a narrow 33-32 edge in the all-time series against the Eagles.

Statistical leaders for the Quakers included Giannopoulou with team-high 17 points, going 5-for-13 from the field, six boards, 6-for-8 from the charity stripe, and two blocks. Zoe Bayer (Les Sables d'Olonne, France) finished with 12 points, five rebounds, and went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Courtney McMillan (Lexington, N.C.) ended the day with ten points, going 5-for-9 from the field, and snatched three steals. Julianna Walter (Taylorsville, N.C.) was all over it on defensive with five rebounds alongside game-high four steals. Walter also was the main distributor as she finished with game-high five assists.

Key Eagles for the day were Riley Corcoran who scored game-high 21 points, going 8-for-15 from the floor, going 4-for-5 from the free throw line, gathering two blocks, two steals, and dishing out three assists. Jaden Alsberry, had the team's second-best performance as she walked away with 17 points, seven boards, four blocks, and two steals. Jasmine Griffin, scored ten points, went 3-for-7 from the field, and earned two blocks and two steals.

Guilford opened strong behind Briahna Scott's (Graham, N.C.) who had eight points and two steals, with McMillan contributing early for a 6-3 lead. Massenburg's fastbreak layup and Perry's free throws extended Guilford's lead to 10-7. Despite Corcoran's free throws and Alsberry's layup narrowing the score to 12-11, Giannopoulou's back-to-back baskets, including a jumper assisted by Taylor Dunn (Charlotte, N.C.), kept Guilford ahead 14-13 at the quarter's end.

The two teams were trading baskets as the Quakers extended their lead with Giannopoulou's three and Scott's layup. Bridgewater fought back with Alsberry and Corcoran scoring, narrowing the gap to 24-22. Perry and McMillan responded with crucial layups to keep GC ahead. Despite India Dailey's late score for BC, GC maintained a 28-24 halftime lead.

Guilford held off Bridgewater in the third, starting with Scott's layup and Giannopoulou's jumper. BC closed the gap with a 7-0 run, led by Dailey's three and Corcoran's layup. Bayer's three and Walter's free throws secured a 43-39 Guilford lead heading into the fourth.

Quarter four was a back-and-forth showdown. Bridgewater's 7-0 run, led by Corcoran and Alsberry, gave them a brief 44-43 lead. After multiple lead changes, Bayer's three-pointer tied the game at 57, and Giannopoulou's layup made it 59-57. Despite Scott's late free throw, Corcoran's clutch layup secured Bridgewater's 61-60 win. Missed free throws and critical defensive plays defined the quarter.
