Women’s Tennis Overpowered by Virginia Wesleyan on Senior Day

Nhouyvanisvong honored in final home match of the season

GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Guilford College women's tennis team (6-8, 4-5 ODAC) fell, 7-0, to visiting Virginia Wesleyan University (7-7, 5-3 ODAC) on Sunday afternoon at the Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael '37 Centennial Class Courts. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match marked the Quakers' final home contest of the season and served as a special Senior Day tribute for veteran student-athlete Jolie Nhouyvanisvong (Greensboro, N.C.). Despite the loss, the afternoon held meaning for the Quakers, who celebrated Nhouyvanisvong's contributions and leadership throughout her Guilford career.

Virginia Wesleyan opened the day with a commanding sweep in doubles play. The top Marlins pairing of Tuva Flink and Jette Hafermann downed Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.), 6-2. At the No. 2 spot, Nhouyvanisvong teamed up with Amy Soto Salgado (Conover, N.C.) but fell, 6-1, to Zoe Vliegen and Mikisha Thomas. The Marlins completed the sweep as Lina Hackner and Haley Haydon blanked Bethany Lupo (Tabor City, N.C.) and LaNiya Ward (Pittsburgh, Pa.) , 6-0, at No. 3 doubles.

In singles action, Guilford battled hard but ultimately came up short in each match. Belnap pushed Flink in the second set at No. 1 singles before dropping a 6-2, 7-6 (11) decision. Mendez was defeated by Vliegen, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 2 position, while Nhouyvanisvong turned in a spirited effort at No. 3 singles but was edged by Hackner in a close first set tiebreak, 7-6 (3), before falling 6-0 in the second. Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) fell to Hafermann, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles, and Soto Salgado engaged in a gritty three-set contest at No. 5 but was edged out, 4-6, 6-2, 10-5. Lupo rounded out singles play for the Quakers, falling 6-4, 6-0 to Haydon at No. 6.

The Quakers conclude their 2025 season on Tuesday, April 15, when they travel to Ashland, Virginia, to face Randolph-Macon College. First serve is set for 4 PM.
