Women’s Lacrosse Cannot Hang On, Fall In Thriller At Ferrum

DeFeo’s career-game squandered in defeat

FERRUM, Va. – Carm DeFeo (Shelton, Conn.) contributed a career-best six points for the Guilford College women's lacrosse team (4-11, 1-7 ODAC) but they could not hold off Ferrum College (6-8, 3-6 ODAC) in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play, falling 17-16 at W.B. Adams Stadium on Wednesday evening.

This one was very tight statistically with shots just 38-36 in favor of GC and shots on goal were 22-18 with the edge to FC. Draw controls were even at 18 and turnovers at 17 while the guests went 16-19 on clears against 16-18 for the hosts. Guilford scored eight free-position goals against Ferrum's three but standard, flow of action lacrosse made the difference in this one.

Falling to 3-8, Sammy Keene (Greensboro, N.C.) has had better days in goal for the Quakers as she allowed 17 goals against 14 saves with one groundball in the disadvantageous decision.

Cayden West owned a near identical line, but permitted just 16 goals with 14 saves to improve to 6-8 for the Panthers, adding a groundball.

DeFeo led Guilford, matching her career-high with five goals and adding a career-best six groundballs. Maggie Hartnett (Hebron, Maine) scored four goals and had an assist while recording both of GC's caused turnovers. Emma Garland (Hampstead, N.C.) was great in the circle, matching her career-high with nine draw controls in addition to four goals. Riley Gravley (Greensboro, N.C.) added five DCs in addition to two goals and a helper.

The tandem of Lana Barcovic and Ashtyn Bishop led FC, scoring five goals apiece with the later registering two assists. Makaila Veney paced the hosts in several supplementary categories with nine draw controls, four caused turnovers, and six groundballs.

The Quakers opened the scoring quickly on this afternoon as Garland secured the opening draw before a defensive breakdown resulted in Hartnett being left unaccounted for in the center of the Panthers defense. Gravley found her, and the graduate student turned, and then shot back across her body, bouncing it past West and into the right side of the net. FC scored three-straight in response with Bishop cashing in on a free-position prior to consecutive Barcovic tallies. DeFeo found paydirt on a free-position chance from the right-wing, beating the keeper to the strong-side then Garland got the equalizer, rotating from behind the cage and flashing in front of the net where Hartnett, saw her, hit her, and the sophomore did the rest, scoring mid-height on the left. Garland's second-straight tally grabbed the lead back, working from just to the left of straight-away on a free-position and shooting into the upper-left 90 to extend the score to 4-3. Making it three-in-a-row, Garland showcased great off-ball movement, cutting across the face of the keeper before getting a DeFeo feed and shooting into the top-right. The Panthers evened things with consecutive goals by Barcovic, to bring the score back to where we started, tied, now at 5-5 after one.

Maggie Cass and Bishop tallies put FC in front but the Quakers proceeded to lock down. Hartnett netted a free-position goal from the left wing, skipping her shot into the right of the twine before Gravley followed suit, beginning from the right-wing and going bar-down on the strong side to make it seven-all. DeFeo put the Quakers back in front as her first attempt was saved but the rebound remained free and she kind of just shuttled a shot hockey-style past the keeper to claim the lead ahead of Hartnett going low-left on a straight-away free-position shot. DeFeo went top-shelf on a free-position chance then Gravley did the same in transition and DeFeo made it a quartet of first-half goals on a free look to get GC to a dozen. Caroline Moore finally halted the seven-consecutive Guilford goals, but the score was 12-8 at the half.

A pair of goals from Bishop cut into the deficit to open the second half before DeFeo got one back going low-left side for her fifth tally of the game, however the Panther completed the comeback with another three after to even things at a baker's dozen. Hartnett reclaimed the lead with a straight-away free position shot into the bottom left then Garland extended the advantage with a chance from a penalty as well, going between the keepers' legs to make it 15-13 at the end of three.

The Panthers would control the fourth quarter, however, netting the first four goals of the stanza. Kylie Wood (Greensboro, N.C.) scored with 65 seconds remaining to give GC a chance, but Ferrum controlled the draw and ran out the clock for a 17-16 win.

Now mathematically eliminated from postseason contention, Guilford will return home for their Senior-less Senior Day but will honor graduate student, Maggie Hartnett, in their final home game of the season on Saturday, April 19th when they host Sweet Briar College starting at 3:00 PM.
