DANVILLE, Va.- Making its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament appearance since 2016, the Guilford College women's tennis team (7-9, 5-5 ODAC) saw its season come to an end on Tuesday afternoon with a 4-0 loss to No. 2 seed Averett University (15-4, 9-1 ODAC) at the Averett Tennis Courts.
The Cougars struck early with a commanding sweep in doubles play to take the opening point. On court one,
Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and
Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) fell 6-0 to Siddhi Khandelwal and Jennika Jaison. At No. 2,
Jolie Nhouyvanisvong (Greensboro, N.C.) and
Amy Soto Salgado (Conover, N.C.) dropped a 6-1 decision to the dominant duo of Brenda Poulakidas and Ravaka Ramanantoanina.
Bethany Lupo (Tabor City, N.C.) and
LaNiya Ward (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also struggled to find footing on court three, falling 6-1 to Elisa Battermann and Dilara Sultanova
Averett carried that momentum into singles action, quickly taking control of the match. At No. 3 singles, Nhouyvanisvong was overpowered by Sultanova, falling 6-0, 6-0. Lupo followed with a 6-0, 6-0 loss at No. 6 to Annika Kellerer. The match was ultimately clinched on court two, where Mendez dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Khandelwal, sealing the 4-0 sweep for the Cougars.
The remaining singles matches were left unfinished due to tournament scoring rules. Belnap lost 6-2 in the first set at No. 1 when play was halted, while Sizemore and Soto Salgado were each in the second set of their respective matches.
This concludes the 2024-2025 season for the Guilford College women's tennis team.
