Men’s Lacrosse Dominates Averett in 17-4 Road Rout

Palombo, Woods, and Brown lead offensive barrage as Guilford secures first ODAC win of the season

DANVILLE, Va.– The Guilford College men's lacrosse team (3-10,1-5 ODAC) saw three players notch a hat-trick, delivering a commanding 17-4 victory over Averett University (4-9, 1-5 ODAC) in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Wednesday night at Campbell Stadium.
 
The Quakers dominated across the board, outshooting the opposition 47-21, with a 30-7 advantage in shots on goals. In the faceoff circle, the good guys secured 16 out of 24 faceoff attempts, while scooping 44 ground balls. Caused turnovers proved to be crucial, with the away team forcing 13, compared to the Cougars' eight.
 
Guilford went with their usual starter in Darius Safavi-Abbassi (Culver City, Calif.). The man in goal made two saves against three shots on goal, allowing one goal. With this performance, his save percentage drops to .468 and overall record improves to 3-9. Gavin Dellinger (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) made an appearance at halftime, conceding three goals, moving his save percentage to .386. Lucas Satterwhite (Oxford, N.C.) made his second appearance of the season, closing out the game for the Quakers in the fourth quarter. The sophomore made one save against five shots, improving his save percentage to .500. Robbie Isenhour was in-between the pipes for the Cougars, making 13 saves against 30 shots on goal, allowing 17 goals. Isenhour's record drops to 3-7.
 
Seth Woods (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) led the team with an impressive four goal showing, alongside one  helper, while Gavin Brown (Charleston, S.C.) posted a game high- six points (two goals, four assists). Davis Palombo (Greensboro, N.C) followed with a hat-trick, alongside two assists. Bashwyn Fitch (Charleston, S.C.) joined in on the fun and got himself a hat-trick as well, notching his second of the season. Jacob Mills (Culpeper, Va), Aimery Workman (High Point, N.C.), River Hull (Lexington, Va.), Cam Walters (Greensboro, N.C.), and Drew Sizemore (Greensboro, N.C.) each contributed with a goal. Ezekiel Gravley (Summerfield, N.C.) etched an assist rounding out Guilford's offensive efforts. Hull led the team in ground balls with eight. Wyatt Dwyer (Seattle, Wash.) and Sizemore each caused three turnovers and combined for 10 ground balls.
 
Tigran Ceesay led Averett with two goals. Zac Colman and Emmett Wood added a tally each, rounding out Averett's scoring. 
 
Guilford jumped in on the action early on, after a quiet three minutes of gameplay. Fytch opened up the scoring for the Quakers. Although Averett managed a quick response with a man up goal from Wood, the Quakers reeled off four unanswered tallies to close out the first quarter 5-1. Palombo recorded a hat-trick in the frame, including an unassisted goal and two more off assists from Woods and Brown.
 
The second stanza was all Guilford once again, extending their lead with three more goals, including an unassisted strike from Sizemore . Woods and Brown each converted their tallies thanks to helpers from Palombo. Guilford's defensive force held the Cougars scoreless in the period, as Safafi-Abbassi turned two shots away helping maintain an 8-1 advantage at halftime.
 
In the third quarter, Guilford continued to push the pace offensively, despite conceding the opening goal of the half at the 13:11 mark. Despite two goals from Ceesay and one from Zac Colman, the Quakers pulled on five more goals of their own. Woods and Hull notched unassisted goals, while Walters added a goal off a Brown assist and Mills finished a feed from Gravley to give Guilford a strong 13-4 lead heading into the final frame.
 
The fourth quarter sealed the deal, with the Quakers scoring four more. Woods completed his four-goal performance on an unassisted goal and an assisted one from Brown. Workman pitched in one at the 7:40 mark unassisted, while Fitch closed the game out with a man-up goal, assisted by none other than Brown, tying his season-high in assists (4).
 
The men's lacrosse team returns to Armfield Athletic Center on Saturday, April 12, when they host Bridgewater College in another ODAC showdown. Faceoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
