Arias, Overton Braces Lead Women’s Soccer In Onslaught of Carolina

Five Quakers find the back of the net in runaway victory

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – With their second resounding effort of opening weekend, this one featuring a quartet of multi-point contributors, the Guilford College women's soccer team (2-0-0, 0-0-0 ODAC) blitzed Carolina University (0-2-1, 0-0-0 NAIA) to the tune of a 7-0 result on Sunday afternoon at the Truist Sports Park.

For the second-straight game, the Quakers saw a collegiate debut in net as Lorelai Liss (Bradenton, Fla.) got the nod, and like Friday, she went uncontested with the Bruins managing just a single off-frame shot, but it nonetheless resulted in her first victory in goal to improve to 1-0-0. CU deployed a trio of keepers on the day with none of them really seeing much success deterring the GC attack. Their starter, Alona Locklear, finished with three goals conceded against four saves and took the defeat to drop to 0-1-1.

The Guilford scoring was dispersed across five different players with another two contributing assists. Matching her career goals total entering the contest, Grace Overton (Apex, N.C.) found paydirt twice, as did Ava Arias (Pittsboro, N.C.), whose tallies were the first two of her collegiate career. Ainsley Yates (West End, N.C.) made it two-for-two on netting game-winners this season, later adding an assist, while Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.) matched her line with one goal and one helper. Zekiah Johnson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) netted the final Quaker goal with Lily Brown (Boone, N.C.) and Sarah Bain (Haymarket, Va.) each pitching in an assist along the way.

Natalie Puskar mustered the lone Bruin shot attempt on the day.

Prodding the Carolina defense early, with multiple shots and three very early corners, GC broke through in the 17th minute of play. Yates received a pass at the top of the 18' then created a nice seal on a turn over her right shoulder before using her left foot to beat the keeper cross-crease and into bottom-left of net for her second goal of the season.

That would be the lone Quaker goal until the 38th minute when a Bruin defender attempted to clear the ball, but the GC pressure proved fruitful with Overton getting her shin in front and ricocheting the kick back. The result was a free run for Arias who split the defenders and finished into the bottom-left for her first collegiate tally.

Arias got another score for Guilford in the 44th minute on a similar play with their pressure influencing a clear attempt leading to a clean look and goal.

Into the second half, the Quakers pilled it on, first with Berry finishing a score in the 51st minute stemming from a well-placed corner kick by Yates. Less than 150 seconds later, they executed on another set piece, this time off a foul and with Berry initiating play with a great ball off the left post that the keeper had a chance to make a play on, but she could not complete the catch allowing Overton to clean things up on the weak side. Overton netted her second of the match in the 64th minute then Johnson put home the PAT in the 76th minute to grant GC the 7-0 win.

Guilford returns to Appenzeller Field next to play Methodist on Wednesday, September 3rd beginning at 7:00 PM.
