GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford men's soccer team (3-4-1, 0-0-0 ODAC) fought for any scoring opportunity they could receive in the morning showing against Sewanee University (7-0-2, 0-0-0 SAA). Unfortunately, the Quakers would fall in their final non-conference matchup, 5-0 in favor of the Tigers, at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
Chris Kelley (Lexington, N.C.) and
Ildis Vital-Peraza (Vienna, Va.) would both share the work in goal, each holding 45 minutes of playing time to their name. Kelley received the nod in the starting lineup, reeling in two saves, giving up three goals against off a peppering seven shot attempts, dropping his record to 1-1-1 on the season. Vital-Peraza would arrive in the second half, but wouldn't do much better for the Quakers as he scooped up three saves, while surrendering two goals against a battering eight shot attempts. Sewanee's keeper, Nathan Vanhoeve held 83 minutes of ground in the game, nabbing five saves off an overwhelming 13 shot attempts, bringing his record to 7-0-2 on the season. Sewanee's backup keeper, Reed Gunzenhouser, came in with minimal time left to wrap things up for the Tigers, fishing one save off two shot attempts.
There was not much accomplished for Guilford offensively
Jaykob Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) leading the charge on the offensive front with three shot attempts, two being on-goal.
Demetrio Candela-Habana (Winston-Salem, N.C.) was accurate overall in his performance with his two shot attempts, one being on goal. A plethora of Quakers would also hold their ground being on point in their goal chances with
Chris Hercules (Greensboro, N.C.),
Saeed Saavedra (Mount Airey, N.C.), and
Jake Carter (Madison, N.C.) each striking a shot being on goal.
The Tigers were on fire in this morning's battle Noah Bjorkman hitting two darts from the distance for both his goals. Stokes McConnell would continue the domination for Sewanee, executing from a miss hit by the defender on the endline for his fourth goal of the season. Isaac Rasheed and Wells Durham would both show superbness from Quaker fouls for Tiger goals off a free-kick and a penalty kick.
Sewanee would strike first in the opening possession after the kickoff with a Bjorkman goal assisted by McConnell from a blown coverage in Guilford's defensive front.
McConnell would strike next in the Tigers second opportunity in the half off a mishit in the offensive zone. Rasheed would wrap things up in the half for Sewanee with his score off a Quaker mishap foul leading to a Tiger free-kick scoring opportunity.
Things wouldn't fare much better for Guilford defensively in the opening minutes of the second half with Bjorkman executing his strike on the dime from a deep assist from Alpha Bah for Sewanee.
The Quakers wouldn't stand a chance defensively in the morning battle due to the Tigers carrying out a commanding performance on both sides of the ball with the game wrapping up from a Durham penalty kick goal. Guilford would ultimately be subdued from beginning to end, resulting in a 5-0 decision in favoring the Tigers
The Quakers will be back in action on Saturday, September 27th, at 6:00 PM to begin kickoff Old Dominion Athletic Conference action against Virginia Wesleyan University at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
