Trio of Quakers Score, Women’s Soccer Blanks North Carolina Wesleyan

Quakers complete nonconference slate unscathed with third-straight win

GREENSBORO, N.C. – With their sixth shutout in eight non-conference contests, the Guilford College women's soccer team (6-0-2, 0-0-0 ODAC) finalized their out-of-league slate unblemished on Wednesday night, rolling North Carolina Wesleyan University (1-5-1, 0-1-0 USA South) 3-0 at Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center.

Madison Motto (Waxhaw, N.C.) started in frame and already has made a dent in the program record books with her fourth clean sheet, tied for ninth-most in a single season in program history and upping her record to 4-0-0. Still yet to concede a goal, she upped her career-best mark for single-game saves to four while facing seven total shots. Falling to 0-3-0 for the Battling Bishops, Lauren Graham made seven saves while permitting three goals over 14 shots sent her way.

Ainsley Yates (West End, N.C.) netted her third game-winning goal of the season among her three shots on the evening. Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.) found the back of the net for the second-straight game while Ava Arias (Pittsboro, N.C.) was the final GC goal-scorer on the night. Lily Brown (Boone, N.C.), Sarah Miller (Charlotte, N.C.), and Grace Overton (Apex, N.C.) all contributed helpers in the match.

Maison Berrios was the top offensive producer for North Carolina Wesleyan with a pair of shots, both on-frame. Kayden Comerford and Samantha Dell each had two shot attempts including one threatening the net.

Both sides got strong looks in the early going, with the Battling Bishops applying swift offensive pressure and Eden Whiteside getting a shot from distance and above the reach of Motto that clanged off the crossbar only about three and a half minutes in. Guilford then flipped the script, seizing control of the tempo resulting in a great chance for Zekiah Johnson (Winston-Salem, N.C.), getting a one-on-one chance inside the '18, but putting it off the inside of the post and ricocheting away in the 13th minute.

The Quaker breakthrough came in the closing seconds of the half as Miller got a takeaway in the offensive zone on an attempted NCWU clearance. Passing ahead into the box, Yates and Overton worked a tight give-and-go style action at the top of the '18 freeing up Yates moving towards the net. With a free look one-on-one against the keeper, the junior ripped a shot with her right foot from about 11 yards out, going bottom-right for her third score of the season in the 45th minute.

Into the second half of play, the Quakers were able to add on in the 62nd minute. Working a set piece off a corner, Brown and Chloe Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.) got the ball into the 18' on the right side. Brown sent a beautiful ball to the post on the weak side, finding the head of Berry who tapped it into the right side of the twine for her fourth goal of the fall.

Putting the game firmly out of reach in the 86th minute of play, the Quakers worked out of corner with Miller sending a pass to just beyond '18 on left wing. There Arias collected using one-touch to settle, then rocketing a certified beauty from roughly 20 yards away, tucking it into the upper-left 90 for the finalizing goal of Guilford's 3-0 win.

Opening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play next, GC heads up to Salem, Virginia to clash with Roanoke College next on Saturday, September 27th at 3:00 PM.
