GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford men's soccer team (2-2-0, 0-0-0 ODAC) was heavily involved on both sides of the ball on Saturday morning against cross-town rivals Greensboro College (2-0-1, 0-0-0 USA South), ultimately falling short in a high-intensity battle, 2-0, at Pride Field.
Ildis Vital-Peraza (Vienna, Va.) was the lone keeper for the Quakers, corralling five saves against two goals conceded on nine shot attempts, bringing his record to 1-2-0 on the season. Greensboro's keeper, Alvaro Hermosa, reeled in two saves on seven shots faced, ending the match with the win, moving his record to 2-0-1.
Jaykob Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) was the only Quaker who managed steady pressure on the offensive front with four shots, two being on goal. Three more contributors added to Guilford's offensive totals with
Dani Santos (Port St. Lucie, Fla.),
Chris Hercules (Greensboro, N.C.), and
Hector Rodriguez (Sanford, N.C.), each contributing a single shot attempt.
The Pride was strong on their side of the ball as Gustav Ohman started off the scoring for Greensboro in the 12th minute of play, later adding a helper. Jade Diane was another contributor for the hosts starting in the second-half as he scored in the 59th minute of play. The home squad had eight key players executing shots on point with Ohman leading the charge with two shot attempts, one being on goal.
In the morning game on rivalry-weekend, the game started off strong on both sides as teams were fighting for possession. The Pride would kickoff the scoring as Ohman would score on an unassisted goal.
The actions would continue to brew throughout the first half as several yellow cards were drawn for both teams in the third and 14th minutes as the chippiness of the rivalry was sizzling downtown.
The second half was summed up by the Quakers as their ineffective offensive-showing continued and Greensboro scored once again off a goal by Diane that was assisted by Ohman in the 59th minute of play.
Guilford held strong with plenty of scoring opportunities with 13 corner kicks and several free-kick opportunities in the attacking zone, but the Greensboro defense would hold firm resulting in a 2-0 decision in favor of the Pride.
The Quakers will be back in action on Tuesday, September 9th, in their second-straight road match at 6:00 PM to take on William Peace University at WakeMed Soccer Park.
