Methodist Bests Men’s Lacrosse In 2026 Opener

Campbell, Crowley notch multi-goal showings in season debut

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College men's lacrosse team (0-1, 0-0 ODAC) opened their 2026 campaign with a matchup against Methodist University (1-1, 0-0 USA South) falling at Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center, 13-5 on Wednesday night.

The Quakers had some trouble sustaining their attack, committing 31 turnovers while accruing a 44-27 edge in total shots and 24-12 in shots on goal. GC also only converted on 17-of-22 clears against 18-for-20 by the Monarchs.

Darius Safavi-Abbassi (Culver City, Calif.) got the start in goal for Guilford and went a vast majority of the time, allowing 12 goals while making 11 saves but ended up on the hook for the loss to drop to 0-1. Cole Rigsby manned the cage for Methodist making eight stops against four goals allowed to claim the win and move to 1-1.

Jason Campbell (Fairfax, Va.) and Kenneth Crowley (Charlotte, N.C.) led Guilford netting a pair of goals apiece and Nick Ianonne (Wellington, Fla.) pitched in the final Quaker tally. Brendon Bradford (King, N.C.) dished an assist for GC in the contest. Defensively, Hudson Bosland (Otisville, N.Y.) was strong, causing three turnovers and getting five groundballs.

Nick Spinola scored four goals to lead the Monarchs while Jay Legg netted a pair and assisted on three other tallies. RJ Breeden evenly split his four points with two goals and two assists and J.R. Newman also scored twice and doled out an assist.

Methodist bookended the first quarter with goals as Newman linked up with Legg just over a minute and a half in then Breeden found Logan Garrett for a man-advantage tally with 16 seconds remaining. In between, the defenses set the tone with MU limiting Guilford's scoring chances and sustained attacks while Safavi-Abbassi made three saves and GC permitted just five of 12 shots to go on frame in the quarter.

Legg scored unassisted six minutes into the second before the Quakers broke through as Bradford found Campbell for a man-up tally. A trio of Monarch tallies followed, two by Spinola and the eventual game-winner by Moore before Iannone got GC's second, unassisted. A Breeden tally for the guests brought the score to 7-2 midway through.

Crowley opened the second-half scoring just under two and a half minutes in before Newman scored consecutive tallies. Campbell's second of the game finished the frame in a 9-4 score.

The fourth saw the Monarchs score four before Crowley got the last one before Crowley finished the tallies with his second goal, bringing the final score to 13-5.

Guilford gets a week before hosting Greensboro in their crosstown rivalry clash on Wednesday, February 18th with a 4:00 PM faceoff.
