Softball Drops Two Against Kenyon During Home Opener

Quakers pitching-woes linger after failed comeback-bid

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College softball team (3-2-1, 0-0 ODAC) competed their home opener against Kenyon College (4-2, 0-0 NCAC) on Sunday afternoon. The Quakers were climbing up the leaderboard in the back of Morgan Singletary's homer (Laurel Hill, N.C.), faltering late in a 5-4 decision in favor of the Owls, which propelled into game two, being defeated 10-2 in five innings at Haworth Field.

Abbey Whelan (Gaithersburg, Md.) drew her second start of the season for Guilford, however struggling to find her footing in the outing, only throwing 4.0 innings, surrendering eight hits, off three earned runs which resulted in the loss, dropping her record to 0-1 on the season. Dillon Northen (Kernersville, N.C.) would enter in relief, not faring much better as she pitched 3.0 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, off three hits and struck out one batter.

Kylie Hamm would escape through numerous jams in her start for Kenyon, pitching all 7.0 innings, while surrendering four runs, all earned, off a battering 12 hits, one walk, and striking out three, earning the victory to go to 2-1 overall.

Morgan Singletary (Laurel Hill, N.C.) topped the Quaker-performers at the plate, hitting 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three stolen bases. Chloee Stoner (Salisbury, N.C.) would follow-suit hitting 2-for-3, adding three swiped bags in the process. Kalissa Williams (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) would match that performance recording 2-for-3 at the dish with one walk and one stolen base.

Keala Montgomery would bash 2-for-4 for Kenyon, logging three RBIs throughout the matinee. Maeve McGlaughlin and Leah Kuban would each record a 2-for-4 outing at the dish, McGlaughlin stealing a base and Kuban penciling in an RBI single in the process.

Emma Parnell (Troy, N.C.) was given the nod for her first collegiate start in game two in the circle for Guilford. Parnell would wrap up the afternoon, tabulating 3.2 innings pitched, dropping seven runs, all earned, off seven hits, two walks, and striking out two batters while losing this battle to fall to 0-1 on the year. Micah Wilson (Asheboro, N.C.) would enter late in the fourth, faltering in her relief outing in the circle, giving up three runs, all earned, off five hits and one walk.

Izzy Akin pitched a solid-performance in game two, throwing all 5.0 innings, dropping two runs, all earned from one walk.

Savannah Newton (Concord, N.C.) would record a 1-for-2 performance, logging an RBI from her triple late in the bottom of the second. Nicole Drew (Raleigh, N.C.) recorded her first start in the batting order for the Quakers, matching Newton's outing, swinging 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Kinsey White was the standout performer for the Owls, highlighting a 3-for-3 outing with two RBIs, further increasing Kenyon's lead in the top of the fourth. Peyton Green and Keala Montgomery as the Owls bats would heat-up, Green recording a 2-for-3 performance and Montgomery logging a 2-for-4 performance in game two.

GAME 1
Jaylee Byrd (Ronda, N.C.) would kick off the scoring in game one off her RBI-double into right field in the fourth. Guilford's pitching did not return to form in the fifth as Kenyon would roll in scoring five runs starting with Keala Montgomery's RBI triple.
Kaylyn Little (Locust, N.C.) and Brooke Goyings (Lake Villa, Ill.) would return the favor in the off Goyings RBI single to cut Guilford's deficit to three. Morgan Singletary (Laurel Hill, N.C.) would launch a long home run into left field, being Guilford's first homer of the 2026 campaign. Unfortunately this would be all the Quakers could accomplish, dropping game one at the end of the seventh.

GAME 2
Scoring would cease heading into game two as Guilford's only success would come from Savannah Newton's (Concord, N.C.) RBI-triple, scoring Nicole Drew (Raleigh, N.C.), logging her first collegiate-hit as a Quaker, which would send Guilford's first run to home in the bottom of the second.

However, as pitching mistakes and defensive mistakes would spread into the third, Guilford would four runs in the fourth, becoming more difficult to come back from as  the Quakers would drop this clash by an eight-run margin through five innings.

Guilford will travel on the road for a pair against the Avenging Angels of Meredith College at the Meredith Softball Complex on Wednesday, March 4th. First pitch of game one will commence at 1:00 PM, while game two is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
