Softball Drops Two Against Greensboro In Crosstown Clash

Quaker pitching miscues falter chances for a walk-off

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College softball team (7-6-1, 0-0 ODAC) failed to gauge their footing in the Battle of the Triad against Greensboro College (9-7, 0-0 USA South), dropping game one, 10-3, due to early pitching mistakes, not faring much better with numerous stumbles in the second clash, falling 7-6 to the Pride on Sunday afternoon at Haworth Field.

Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) received the start for the opening contest for Guilford, struggling to find her footing, only tossing 0.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits, one walk, and was on the losing end of the battle, falling to 1-2 on the season. Kalissa Williams (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) would enter in relief for the remainder of the battle, surrendering a battering seven runs, five earned, on eight hits, three walks, punching out nine in a 6.2 inning effort.

Raina Hampel got the nod for Greensboro, throwing a gem of 6.0 innings, dropping one earned run on six hits, one walk, striking out one batter for the victory to advance to 2-2 on the year. Leah Leonard closed things out for the Pride, giving up two earned runs on two hits, while striking out one.

Savannah Newton (Concord, N.C.) dominated at the dish for the Quakers, logging 1-for-1 with one RBI and two walks. Brooke Goyings (Lake Villa, Ill.) matched Newton in getting on base during every at-bat, slashing 3-for-3, and scoring once. Janey Galek (Charlotte, N.C.) kept Guilford in contention late, swinging 1-for-1 with 2 RBIs and scoring herself off her three-run home run.

Alexis Lynch was perfect for Greensboro at the plate, bashing 4-for-4 with three RBIs and one run. Raven Taylor followed suit, recording 3-for-3 with three runs, two walks, and one run batted in. Ella Ebert kept the Pride's production going, swinging 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run.

Emma Parnell (Troy, N.C.) was in the circle for Guilford to begin game two, pitching 3.0 innings, surrendering three earned runs on three hits, four walks, and striking out six. Dillon Northen (Kernersville, N.C.) entered in relief out of the bullpen, cutting the Pride's deficit in 3.0 innings of work, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits, punching out one in the process. Abbey Whelan (Gaithersburg, Md.) closed things out, slipping the Quakers' victory chances in her 1.0 innings, surrendering one earned run off two hits, while striking out two on the losing end of the clash, dropping to 0-2 on the year.

Kenly Brown displayed inaccuracies in her game two start for Greensboro, throwing 1.2 innings, dropping four earned runs on four hits, one walk, while striking out one. In a defensive switch, Ella Ebert came in relief from first base, keeping the Pride in it with 3.1 innings of work, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits and one walk. Anna Frazier put this battle on ice with 2.0 commanding innings, only surrendering one hit for the win to advance to 4-3 overall.

Kaylee Harris (Mooresville, N.C.) created a solid showing at the dish, slashing 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI. Kalissa Williams (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) tried to match that swinging 2-for-4 in the closing outing. Janey Galek (Charlotte, N.C.) followed suit in recording her 2-for-4 stat line, with one run and one RBI.

Erica Chaney made it difficult for Guilford to maintain their early three-run lead, superior in all aspects for Greensboro, with her 2-for-3 display, with one walk, collecting one run and four RBIs to her name. Ella Ebert held her ground in slashing 1-for-4 with two runs scored.

GAME 1
Greensboro would get things rolling early in the clash, collecting six runs off three hits and defensive mistakes from Guilford to extend their lead 6-0 on the back of Ebert's double into left center in the first and her sac-fly in the second. The Quakers would open a window for opportunity off Savannah Newton's (Concord, N.C.) single into left in the fifth, scoring Keiya Bullock (Peletier, N.C.)

The momentum would swing in Guilford's direction off a Janey Galek (Charlotte, N.C.) two-run home run, increasing the chances of a Quaker's comeback ever so slightly. However, Guilford would ultimately be subdued by too many pitching mistakes, dropping a 10-3 decision in favor of Greensboro.

GAME 2
The Quakers would roar back into control as Janey Galek (Charlotte, N.C.) bashed a single into center, scoring Nicole Drew (Raleigh, N.C.) in the process. The Pride would display many miscues early on in the match, driving in one more Guilford batter, before Savannah Newton (Concord, N.C.) would send in two off her triple into right, extending the Quakers lead 4-0 through two innings.

Erica Chaney launched a homer into deep center, carried by the strong winds blowing to that section of the park, to cut the Pride's deficit to four. Things would get dicey as Greensboro and Guilford would battle back-and-forth to drive the game tied 6-6, heading into the seventh. Chaney would wrap things up for the Pride, sending an RBI-triple into right, putting the game out of reach for Guilford in a 7-6 result in favor of Greensboro.

Guilford heads back on the road for a duo of clashes against William Peace University on Wednesday, March 18th, at William Peace Softball Field. Game one is slated for 2:00 PM, while game two is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
