Guilford Loses ODAC Match To Virginia Wesleyan, 2-0

Greensboro, NC (09/16/00) — Virginia Wesleyan avenged last year's upset loss to Guilford Saturday with a 2-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's soccer win. The game was marred by 18 cautions and ejections and ended Guilford's four-match unbeaten streak.

In the 16th minute of the game Virginia Wesleyan freshman forward Chris Mills (Hagerstown, MD/S. Hagerstown) kicked a corner kick. The ball traveled passed Mills' first target, then bounced off Guilford freshman goalkeeper Ryan Fitzgibbons (Dayville, CT/Killingly) as he attempted to punch the ball out of the box. It landed in front of senior forward Vinnie Sciullo (Marlboro, NY/John Jay) who tapped it in for an easy score.

Virginia Wesleyan's (2-3-1, 2-0 ODAC) second goal came in the 42nd minute while they were up two men after Guilford had two men sent off with red cards. Sophomore back Brad Bertolet (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) scored off a headed pass by senior back James Abadi (Nicholasville, KY/Lexington Catholic) on one of the Marlins' eight corner kicks.

The Quakers (3-2-1, 1-1 ODAC) had a chance to get back into the game when Bertolet was sent off with his second yellow card in the 56th minute, which evened the sides at nine apiece. However, the Marlins' defense held and kept Guilford without a clean scoring chance for the rest of the game.

Guilford scored its first-ever win over Virginia Wesleyan last season, 2-1 in overtime. The Marlins were ranked 16th in the country at the time.
