Greensboro, NC (02/06/03) -- Guilford's defense forced 23 turnovers and limited Washington and Lee to 26 percent shooting from the floor in Friday's 69-38 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball win Friday night. The Quakers (12-7, 10-5 ODAC) have won 10 straight from the Generals (8-13, 5-11 ODAC), who dropped their sixth consecutive contest.
Despite using only seven players due to injury, Washington and Lee hung around early and enjoyed a 19-17 lead with 7:25 remaining in the first half. Sarah Michaels (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk Academy) had 10 of her 12 points by that point in the game for the Generals. The Quakers rallied to end the half on a 13-4 run that included four points apiece by Nicole McCrory (Charlotte, NC/East Mecklenburg) and Lindsey Johnson (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury). Guilford held a 30-23 halftime lead.
The undermanned Generals wearied in the second half and scored only 15 points in the final 20 minutes on seven-of-27 shooting from the floor (0-10 from 3-point range). Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, AZ/The Orme School) and Emily Barker (Clifton, VA/Mount Vernon) were the only Washington and Lee players who scored in the second half. Hunsinger posted a double-double on 14 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs.
While Washington and Lee struggled to find its shot, Guilford made 15 of 25 second-half field goals (60%), including five-of-nine three-pointers (.556). Senior Dara Burke (Richmond, VA/St. Catherine's School) led the Quakers with 10 points and matched her career high with a team-best seven boards. Kelly Burger (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) added nine points and three steals for the Quakers. Jennie Keichline (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) had eight points and two blocks.
Guilford has little time to rest before heading to Lynchburg for a Saturday (02/06) conference contest at 2:00 pm. Washington and Lee returns to action Tuesday (2/10) against Lynchburg.
