Box Score Virginia Beach, Va. (10/28/07) -- Speed plus speed equaled a game-winning goal for Virginia Wesleyan College's men's soccer team on Sunday as the Marlins posted a 2-1 overtime decision over the Quakers of Guilford College in a quarterfinal game of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament.
Two of the fastest players on the VWC team got the best of Guilford's defense in the waning minutes of the overtime period on Foster Field at the Trinder Center as junior Bryan Hutchison took the ball away from a Quaker and sprinted down the right side of the field. Sophomore Brandon Massie followed a similar path only yards away and finished Hutchison's well-placed pass with a hard shot toward the left corner of the goal that gave the Marlins the win with 1:40 on the clock.
The victory advances the No. 1-seeded Marlins to a semifinal game against Roanoke College's Maroons on Friday, Nov. 2, at a time to be announced at the Trinder Center. Virginia Wesleyan improves to 16-2, while eighth-seeded Guilford closes its season with a 5-13-1 mark.
Massie's goal was a satisfying score for the Marlins, who were frustrated by four near-miss scoring opportunities during regulation play. Four shots, including three in the first half, hit the cross bar. But, VWC continued a steady assault on the goal and finished the game with a decisive 30-8 advantage in shots.
Virginia Wesleyan took the lead in the 20th minute when sophomore Bryan Harris \got to a rebound ball following a shot by Kevin Albinder. Albinder's kick bounced off the cross bar and Harris was there to kick it again, ripping it into the left side to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead.
Guilford picked up its pace in the last 10 minutes of the half behind Joe Rigert and Mike McCaffery, but could not find the goal and entered the break trailing 1-0. The Quakers changed that in the 62nd minute however, as McCaffery booted the ball into the net off a corner kick.
Virginia Wesleyan outshot the Quakers 8-0 in the remainder of regulation play and kept Guilford without a shot in overtime. The Marlins attempted three, including one by senior James Monastra that skimmed off the cross bar, before Massie came through on a fourth shot to end the game.
Junior Zane Krezonis protected the goal for VWC and produced one save. Beau Arceneaux did the same for Guilford and recorded 12 saves.
