Guilford Pulls Out 5-4 Women's Tennis Win Over Randolph

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Leigh Fishman's straight-set victory at fifth singles clinched Guilford College's 5-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's tennis win over visiting Randolph College Saturday. Both teams fought off high winds and unseasonably cool temperatures on the McMichael Centennial Class Courts on Guilford's campus.

The win snapped a four-match losing skid for Guilford (5-6) and improved its ODAC record to 4-5. The WildCats slipped to 8-6 (1-6 ODAC) with the loss.

The Quakers took two of three doubles matches for an early 2-1 advantage. Randolph won the first three singles flights, but Guilford lost just four games in six sets in winning the bottom three singles flights.

Fishman's 6-0, 6-1 win over Alex Wieczorek proved the difference Saturday. Fishman also won at second doubles where she teamed with Fernanda Gonzalez to down Emmie Snead and Samantha Dickerson, 8-4. Gonzalez also won twice Saturday thanks to a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Dickerson.

Dina Velazco pulled out a 7-5, 6-2 win over Guilford's Katie Claggett at first singles and teamed with Jenna Sweet for a close 8-5 first-doubles win over Claggett and Riley Caruana. Sweet defeated Guilford's Nora Prokosch, 6-2, 6-2, at second singles.
