Guilford Falls to Virginia Wesleyan

Early deficit proved too much for the Guilford College women's lacrosse team as Virginia Wesleyan University won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup, 14-9.

Virginia Wesleyan (6-4, 2-0) opened the scoring as it netted the first three goals of the contest. Maggie Bryson got Guilford (4-6, 1-1) on the board at the 4:20 mark of the first.

The Marlins added another goal but Bryson scored once more off a pass from Maggie Hartnett. VWU found the back of the net once more to lead 5-2 going to the second period.

The visitors notched the first goal of the second before Kellie Pearson came around from behind the net and scored to keep the Quakers within three. The Marlins scored with just 49 seconds left in the half to lead by four (7-3) at the break.

In the third period, Sydne Sawyer scored her first goal of the contest. Virginia Wesleyan answered with three-straight goals to extend its lead to six (10-4). Sawyer and Kylie Horn found the back of the net but the Marlins scored two to close out the third.

Leading 12-6, VWU added another goal just 59 seconds into the final period of regulation. Sawyer completed the hat trick with an assist to Hartnett. The visitors scored once more but Hartnett and Sawyer found the back of the net once more. Virginia Wesleyan held on for the five-goal victory.

Sawyer (4G) and Hartnett (1G, 3A)  finished with four points while Bryson added two goals. Zenna Carson made 16 saves in 60 minutes of action.

Guilford is set to travel to Randolph-Macon on Saturday, April 9 at 1:00 p.m.
