Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Guilford Falls in a Nail-Biting Five Sets

The Guilford College women's volleyball team hit the road for the last time in the regular season to face the University of Lynchburg. After a grueling five sets, the Quakers fell to the Hornets, 3-2.

For the first portion of the opening set, the two sides were fairly even. Later in the set, Lynchburg held a five-point edge (18-13) but Guilford battled back and evened the set at 19. However, the Hornets won six of the last seven points to take the set.

The second set was more of a seesaw affair with numerous ties. Similar to the first, the home side went on a late run and now led 21-15. Guilford responded once more and pulled within two on separate occasions but ultimately dropped the set, 25-22.

Down 2-0 in the match, the Quakers took early control of the third. Lynchburg kept the score close until a 4-0 GC run opened a 16-10 lead. The hosts narrowed the differential to just a couple of points but a kill by Kaci Johnson capped off the set win, 25-21.

In the fourth, the Hornets grasped the early lead, 5-1. Guilford fought back with seven-consecutive points with three kills from Chrisbel Alcantara. The visitors seemed to be in control of the set and had two set points but Lynchburg evened the set at 24.

The two sides went back and forth as the set was tied at 31. A block by Johnson gave the Quakers a 32-31 edge. Natalie Moore forced a fifth set with an ace to claim the win, 33-31.

Lynchburg opened the fifth set in a furry and led by eight points, 12-4. Runs of three and four points, Guilford pulled within two (13-11) and forced a home timeout. Out of the stoppage, the home side won the final two points to win the set (15-11) and the match (3-2).

Moore finished with 21 kills, 14 digs and two aces. Alcantara added 18 kills while Maddi Page tallied 43 assists and 13 digs.

Guilford (16-8, 5-6) returns to the Ragan-Brown Field House on Friday, October 27 to face Ferrum College for the final conference matchup of the season. Start time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
