Guilford Battles Division I Aggies in Exhibition

The Guilford College women's basketball team opened its 2023-24 season, traveling across town to North Carolina A&T to face the Aggies in an exhibition.

Through the game's first five minutes, the Aggies' defense held the Quakers to just two baskets and five turnovers (12-4). A 10-0 run in the middle of the quarter, the home side held a 22-12 lead at the end of the first period.

In the second quarter, the Aggies stretched their lead to 15 after the game's first and-one play. Transfer guard Betina Bergallo recorded her first assist for the Quakers with a jumper from reigning ODAC Rookie of the Year, Anna Giannopoulou (29-16, 7:55). The ensuing 12-0 run by A&T stretched its lead to 25. The visiting side ended their scoring drought as Amara Harrell made the Quakers' first three-pointer cutting the lead back down to 22 (0:56). After the home side's third three-pointer, they held a 45-19 lead at the half.

At the start of the third, the Aggies' offense continued to play fast with an 8-2 run to make the score 53-21. Back-to-back jumpers from Anaida Datilus and Giannopoulou gave the Quakers an offensive spark in the middle of the period, but A&T replied back with two straight baskets of its own to maintain the large lead, 62-25. A&T rode a 16-2 run in the last five minutes to lead 78-27 at the end of the third quarter.

Guilford started the fourth with their second three-point shot, from Ashtyn Zeigler. Back-to-back free throw tries from Zoe Bayer were countered by eight-straight points from the Aggies to make the score 91-32 with 6:19 left to play. Guilford and A&T traded buckets later in the period, Cristella Smith scoring two straight in this stretch (97-38). The Aggies rode a 17-3 run toward the end of the period to make the final score, 114-41.

Giannopoulou led the Quaker scoring with eight. Bayer added on six of her own, along with two rebounds.

Guilford heads home to Ragan-Brown Field House on Wednesday, November 15, facing ODAC opponent Roanoke College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
