The Guilford College women's basketball team opened scheduled play against Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe, Roanoke College. The Quakers weathered a late push by the Maroons to win, 83-75.
Coming out of halftime, Guilford (1-0, 1-0) led 38-21. The third period was much like the first two periods as it was high-paced with turnovers and transition baskets. The Quakers came out of the gates and increased their lead to 21 (42-21) with baskets from
Jermia Walker and
Ashtyn Zeigler.Â
Later in the third,
Anna Giannopoulou laid one in followed by a Zeigler three to hand GC a 52-26 edge with 4:12 on the clock. Down the stretch, Roanoke (0-1, 0-1) chipped away at the difference and cut it down to 16 (55-39) after six-straight points. Giannopoulou made a layup just before the horn to increase the lead back to 18, 57-39.
To start the fourth quarter, Guilford went on a 9-0 run with four of them coming off the hand of
Courtney McMillan. Over the next four-plus minutes, the Maroons went on an impressive 19-2 stretch as Lauren Keel scored 13 from inside the paint. An
Anaida Datilus layup slowed the run for a moment but the visitors had other plans.
Roanoke started another run, this time 11-2, pulling within five points (72-67) with 2:01 left in regulation.
Zoe Bayer found her groove for the Quakers has she dropped five-straight points to widen the gap. The Maroons made one last charge but time and fouls were not on their side. Guilford nailed six free throws over the final 43 seconds to secure the eight-point win.
Bayer and Giannopoulou each finished with 16 points.
Carleigh Perry and McMillan found themselves in double-digit scoring with 14 and 11, respectively. Overall, nine different Quakers scored on the evening. As a team, GC forced 28 turnovers with 16 steals.
Guilford welcomes Brevard College on Thursday, November 16 for a non-conference matchup. Start time is set for 6:00 p.m.
