Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Quakers Overcome Low-Scoring First Quarter in Dominant Win

The Guilford College women's basketball team welcomed non-conference foe Brevard College to the Ragan-Brown Field House. After a first quarter where both teams scored 14 combined points, the Quakers piled on 72, en route to a 78-65 win.

Transitioning to the second quarter after a low-scoring first, Guilford (2-0) and Brevard (1-1) traded baskets back-and-forth, neither getting away from each other. The Tornados' lead rose as large as five, but the Quakers held strong and eventually held a one-point lead at the half, 28-27.

Guilford rode a 14-3 run, which included four consecutive three-pointers, to begin the third quarter. By the six-minute mark, the home side's lead grew to 12 (42-30). Ashtyn Zeigler came out hot with six points, followed by Courtney McMillan with five and three from Taylor Dunn.

Brevard slowly chipped away midway through the period, but the Quakers kept their foot on the gas, never letting their lead fall below double digits to end up with a 54-43 lead before the start of the fourth.

Similar to the previous period, the home side came out hot; a 10-3 run led to its largest lead of the night, 64-46. McMillan crossed the 20-point threshold with a jumper in this stretch. The Tornados hung around, cutting the deficit to as low as 10, but Guilford stayed strong offensively. Anna Giannopoulou scored eight to help secure the 13-point win.

Two Quakers scored 20-plus points, Giannopoulou with 23 and McMillan with 22. The pair also finished with a doule-double as they grabbed 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively. Zeigler scored 16 of her own, including going 3-6 from the three-point line. As a team, the Quakers shot 42.9 percent beyond the arc (9-30), and forced 26 turnovers with 13 steals.

Guilford remains at home as crosstown rivals, Greensboro College, come to Ragan-Brown for a non-conference matchup. Start time is set for 5:00 p.m.
