The Guilford College women's volleyball team welcomed the Roanoke College Maroons for the first Old Dominion Athletic Conference showdown of the year. After falling behind two sets to one, the Quakers rallied to claim the match in five, 3-2.
In the opening set, Roanoke jumped out to early lead and held the advantage by five points (10-5). From that point on, Guilford slowly chipped away at the deficit. Trailing 21-18, the Quakers went on a 7-0 run behind four kills from
Chrisbel Alcantara and three aces off the hand of
Kaci Johnson. GC found itself up 1-0 with the 25-21 set win.
The second set was tightly contested until the Maroons won 13 of the next 15 points to go ahead by eight (16-8). Each time the Quakers pulled within three points, the visitors expanded the edge and eventually won, 25-17.
Roanoke had a similar start to set three like the first as it controlled most of the scoring. Down by four (17-13), Guilford started to battle back and a four-point run capped off by a
Madison Bozarth ace evened the set at 24. Ultimately, the Maroons won three of the final four points for the 27-25 set win.
Both sides did not back down in the fourth as each side kept the other within striking distance. Once again the Quakers found themselves behind 14-11 but took over the set from there. A 7-1 run propelled the home squad in front, 18-15. GC held the lead for the remainder of the set to win 25-21 and force a fifth set.
Tension set in at the Ragan-Brown Field House as each team was desperate for that first conference win. The action was back and forth with each bench exploding at their respective points. Tied at six, Bozarth took her turn at serving and delivered four-straight aces to move Guilford ahead 10-6. The Maroons tried to find their way back into the set but a kill from
Natalie Moore closed the door and ended the match.
Moore finished the evening with 16 kills and digs as Alcantara added 14 kills.
Maddi Page totaled 41 assists and 16 digs while Bozarth contributed 24 digs and five aces.
Guilford (7-2, 1-0) heads to Greenville, South Carolina on Saturday, September 16 for two matches. The Quakers take on Boyce College at 2:00 p.m. before facing the hosts, Bob Jones University at 4:00 p.m.
