Guilford Battles Methodist

The Guilford College men's soccer team welcomed Methodist University to the Armfield Athletic Center. A late second half goal gave the visitors the 1-0 win.

In the first half, play was even between the two squads. Each side possessed the ball evenly with Guilford totaling 10 shots while Methodist had four.

The Quakers seemed to have more scoring chances but were unable to capitalize on them, as Monarch goalkeeper Trey Gohr stopped all five shots he faced. The game remained scoreless at the half.

In the second half, the two teams continued back and forth. One of Guilford's best chances came in the 59th minute when Chris Hercules played a ball through the back line to Riley Copeland. Copeland fired a shot towards the lower left corner but the Methodist's netminder made the kick save.

The scoreless tie was broken in the 66th minute when the visitors slipped past the Quaker back line and chipped the ball over Roman Robinson.

The physicality and aggressiveness of the match ramped up in the later stages of the 79th minute. Four yellow cards were awarded, evenly split between the two teams.

Play began to calm down between the two teams as time began to wind down. The Quakers were not able to get another chance as it fell by the lone goal.

For the contest, GC held the advantage in shots (12-11) and shots on goal (6-3) while the Monarchs obtained more corner kicks, 7-6.
