Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

First-Quarter Surge Leads Guilford to Away Win

The Guilford College women's basketball team traveled on the road Wednesday night for an evening conference matchup against Ferrum College. The Quakers opened strong, which helped them keep their lead until the very end, besting the Panthers, 71-62.

Just 38 seconds into the first quarter, Anna Giannopoulou made a three. Things started heating up for the Quakers (13-5, 8-4) with 6:18 on the clock when Ashtyn Zeigler made a basket from behind the arc, shortly followed by a three-pointer from Courtney McMillan at 5:32. GC continuously racked up deuces for the remainder of the period, taking a 12 point lead, 23-11.

The second period was a bit different from the first, as the Panthers (6-13, 3-9) overall besting the Quakers. Half of Guilford's points were credited to Zoe Bayer with a three-pointer and two layups. GC ended the half still ahead by 10 due to their first quarter advantage, 37-27.

The second half opened with full force as Zeigler immediately made a three-point basket at 9:46. The rest of the period remained neck and neck for both teams, matching each other's energy. GC was down by four in the quarter as the clock ticked down until Taylor Dunn made a three-pointer. The Panthers just barely bested the Quakers, score-wise in this quarter (18-17) but this still wasn't enough for them to take the lead, 54-45.

Going into the fourth, the Panthers continued to claw back, but the Quaker offense had a plan of their own. Both teams exchanged two points to open the quarter. Both offenses went scoreless over the next two and a half minutes until Ferrum layed one in the net. Carleigh Perry responded with a three-pointer at 6:05 left in the game. At 5:41, the Panthers went on a 6-0 run. This was followed by two-points back-to-back from Giannopoulou. Guilford kept their lead intact, coming away with a road victory, 71-62.

The night concluded with double-digit scores from Giannopoulou and Bayer, 19 and 11, respectively. Additionally, Giannopoulou was slick on the court with four steals. Perry led her team with eight rebounds and three blocks.

The Quakers return back to Ragan-Brown for their next matchup against Bridgewater College on Saturday, January 27. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
