Quakers Power Past Johnson C. Smith for Home Sweep

Johnson’s 14 kills lead Guilford in dominant straight-set win

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College volleyball team (11-7, 3-4 ODAC) returned to Jack Jensen Court and made a statement Wednesday night, sweeping Johnson C. Smith University (2-10, 0-7 CIAA) in three sets (25-18, 25-15, 25-12).

The Quakers opened strong behind efficient hitting from Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.), who finished with a match-high 14 kills on a .478 clip, and steady setting from Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.), who tallied 28 assists. Vivian Cavataio (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) directed the defense with 13 digs, while Natalie Moore (Talbott, Tenn.) added ten digs and a pair of blocks.

Johnson C. Smith was led by Kailyn Hitch's five kills, Yasmine Cannon's 16 assists, and Marci Murrell's 11 digs.

In the first set, Guilford battled through early side-outs before taking control midway, courtesy of kills from Madison Duvall (Sophia, N.C.) and Chrisbel Alcantara (San Juan, Puerto Rico).

The second set saw Guilford's offense ignite, led by Johnson, who tallied six kills in the frame. Angel Brown's (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) key hit helped the Quakers close the frame 25-15.

Guilford never looked back in the third, jumping out to an early lead and maintaining full control behind consistent serve-receive play from Sheryangelis Cay Barbosa (Juncos, Puerto Rico). Aleigh Williams (Walnut Cove, N.C.) sealed the sweep with a late kill to finish the 25-12 clincher, securing the Quakers' 11th win of the season.

The Quakers are back home on Friday, October 17th when they take on the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University. First serve is set for 6:00 P.M.
