Lynchburg Holds Off Women’s Soccer in Conference Clash

Quakers cannot overcome first-half deficit under the Appenzeller lights

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College women's soccer team (8-6-2, 2-6-0 ODAC) dropped an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) encounter to the University of Lynchburg (9-4-2, 4-3-1 ODAC) by a 2-0 decision at Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center on Wednesday evening.

Madison Motto (Waxhaw, N.C.) put together another quality effort, making six saves on the 19 total Hornet shots. She did concede a pair of goals, however, to fall to 4-4-0. Kate Shepherd upped her mark to 9-4-2 with her third solo clean sheet, making a quartet of saves on the nine shots sent her way.

Ainsley Yates (West End, N.C.) and Sarah Miller (Charlotte, N.C.) had Guilford's two on-target shot attempts on this evening. Emily Parker (Lillington, N.C.) and Kylie Berry (Kernersville, N.C.) had a pair of off-target shots each as well.

Makayla Hargrove contributed her third game-winning goal of the fall for the guests with Grace Gaskins pitching in a score later. Madelyn Boyce pitched in an assist in the match.

Opening the scoring in the 19th minute of action, the Hornets executed on a corner kick opportunity. Sammie Rogstad initiated action from the left corner, with the initial redirect coming off the head of Boyce, once that was deterred with a swipe of a hand by Motto. Unfortunately, the freshman keeper was unable to control the rebound as it dropped right at the feet of Hargrove who beat the jab-step by Motto for her sixth goal, into the bottom-middle of the net.

After a mis-hit clear attempt by the Quakers in the 43rd minute of play, Lynchburg capitalized with some insurance. Gaskins displayed great body control, opting not to settle the ball, but instead taking her shot directly off a hip-high bounce just beyond the 18' off the right post, and fired cross-crease for the score. The unassisted tally went for her second goal of the fall.

The second half of play would not see either side find paydirt with the match finishing with tallies of 2-0.

Guilford hits the road for the final time in the regular season with a make-or-break encounter with Shenandoah University on Friday night. First kick in Winchester is set for 7:00 PM.
