GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford College women's lacrosse team (1-2, 0-1 ODAC), despite a trio of
Maggie Hartnett (Oxford, Maine) goals, dropped their Sunday afternoon contest to Oglethorpe University (3-2, 0-0 SAA), 20-6 at Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center.
The Quakers hung around with the Stormy Petrels early, but the guests eventually pulled away as they pilled up 15 first-half goals in the win, doubling up the GC shot attempts overall with a 32-16 advantage. They also went a perfect 16-for-16 on clears against the hosts going 11-of-18.
Kennedy Gates (Cornelius, N.C.) scuffled playing all 60 minutes in net facing 32 shots and 25 on frame. She allowed 20 goals against just five saves to drop to 1-2. OU went with Tori Perez who faced 16 shots making seven saves against six goals in a winning effort to improve to 3-2.
Hartnett found paydirt with a trio of goals to lead Guilford in scoring while
Carm DeFeo (Shelton, Conn.),
Kylie Wood (Greensboro, N.C.), and
Emma Garland (Hampstead, N.C.) all scored singular goals. Garland also led the Quakers with four caused turnovers and four ground balls while DeFeo led the team with four draw controls.
Makenna Bowens spearheaded the Stormy Petrel offensive attack with six goals scored in addition to collecting seven draw controls. Ellis Mitchum had four goals and assisted on two more while Mariah Butler evenly split her six points with three scores and helpers. Savannah Freeman paced Oglethorpe field players with three ground balls.
The visitors jumped on the board right away as Bowens gathered the draw and went straight down to score just 17 seconds in. DeFeo countered with a free-position tally on the man-up chance, but Mitchum netted what ended up as the game-winner about 45 seconds later. Bowens and Anna Ramsden each got on the board before Wood got one back making the score 4-2 just four minutes and eight seconds in. The offenses slowed some although OU went on a burst with Butler on a free-position look, Ramsden, Freeman on a free-position, and Jersey Cuni all scoring within a three-minute span to bring the score to 8-2 after one quarter.
Garland got a tally for Guilford to open the second, but then it was all Stormy Petrels. Mitchum, Butler, Bowens, and Butler again constituted a 4-0 burst before Hartnett's first tally ended the run at the 10:25 mark. However, it just delayed the inevitable as Sarah Liang and Bowens scored to get to running clock and Mitchum scored a free position tally to make it 15-4 at the half.
Contrary to the first half, when the offenses dominated, the second stanza was much more subdued. Freeman and Hartnett traded tallies in the third before Bowens, Cuni, Mitchum, and Bowens again scored against a Hartnett goal in the fourth to bring the final score to 20-6.
Next up, Guilford hosts their delayed season-opener against the University of Lynchburg in a nonconference clash on Tuesday February 25
th beginning at 4:00 PM.
